My greying reddish hair (and Edinburgh colourist recommendations?)

I’m really struggling with my hair. It’s longish, and a reddish mid-brown colour (I’ve attached a pic of Kate Mara whose hair is pretty similar to my natural colour, although unfortunately that’s where the similarities end Smile). I first started to notice greys a few years ago, and would like to colour them, but I’ve tried repeatedly and I don’t feel I’ve ever got this right.

My hairdresser suggested highlights, but obviously the overall effect was to lighten my hair colour (to a strawberry blondish colour), which I didn’t like. I then insisted on a darker all over dye, but she never managed to get the right colour - I think it’s the significant amount of red which makes this hard; it always looks a bit fake / burgundy / too dark.

I’d happily go slightly redder than my natural colour (if it didn’t look too fake) - I’ve got very Celtic colouring, pale skin, green eyes etc. But when I’ve tried just straight brown dyes I look washed out - I need some warmth.

At the moment my hair is an awful mix of grown out highlights, greying temples / patches in front of my ears and random greys, but I don’t want to do anything else to it until I’m confident that it will work. It used to be my best feature!

So, does anyone have advice about colouring greying red(ish) hair? And can anyone specifically recommend a brilliant colourist for this in Edinburgh? Thanks in advance.

Elaine at Toccata off Newhaven Road is the best hairdresser I have ever had.
Sadly I'm overseas now so no longer an option, but I would 100% recommend her.

My mum goes to Iain at Urban Angel.

Thanks all - I shall investigate! Do either of you have red / auburn hair? I think it’s a particular challenge to colour.

My hair is that colour. I have the same colouring as you. I find going any darker washes me out. I’m starting to grey and find this box dye great- doesn’t come out too red and looks completely natural.

Red hair can be very resistant to dying. Mine took 3 hours to dye and then still didn’t take...going to someone who knows wha5 they are doing is important,,
