We are going on hol in a month - I will not get a tan whatever I do (I always get red spots on white), so I need some protective colouring before we go which will last 2 weeks if poss (am willing to not wash while away ). I will not be stripping off anyway but it would be nice to have brown face/neck/arms/shins/feet.

I have tried the Dove stuff and it came out streaky and orange and horrible after one go so I'm not trying that again. Should I go for a bodyshop spray? If so what and which shade?

(It's that or a bin liner tied at the neck)

oh dear! I was just going to suggest the Dove stuff - I've found it really good. Did you exfoliate first? Esp knees, ankles, elbows?

I've seen good reviews for the St Tropez tan.

LilyLoo · 25/04/2007 19:44

i had st tropez really good lasted about week, although make no plans for the night you do it as best to leave shower until the next day and orange is not the word.

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 19:48

I did exfoliate, CD, I have one of those sponges with a scourer on top, but OTOH I also put body lotion on first - I did let that soak in as much as poss (I have terribly dry skin) but it probably didn't help, and I think I missed bits as well.

Anyway it looked crap so I washed it all off again next day (god knows how it would have lloked if I did it every day )

Lily, is there just one shade with St Tropez? Don't they do like pale/pinkish/orange/brown/mahogany?

Not sure i had it done in a salon which tbh i find better elimenates the patches and hard to reach places then !

Rumpel · 25/04/2007 19:50

I think Fake Bake are the best, however, if you are luminescent white sometimes fake tans dont develop as well and you can have a green tinge.

MascaraOHara · 25/04/2007 19:51

I use L'Oreal Nutri Summer - it;s twice the price of Dove/Holiday body (johnsons?) but I find you can get it in a lot of places 2 for 1.. it's a quicker more natural colour (I find) and less streaky. I love it!

Rumpel · 25/04/2007 19:51

If you tend to go orange try Fake Bake - it is really good.

rantinghousewife · 25/04/2007 19:52

I'm very pale, (a ginger whinger!!) but I've had very natural results with the st tropez tinted body moisturiser. You won't look really brown, just slightly sunkissed but I don't really find that a problem. Used to being pasty as I am!!

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 19:54

I have heard of both of those but never seen them, where do I get them, please, Rumpel & MOH?

(I still have time to try the DIY route a couple of times before I give in and go to a salon - a new one just opened here which I assume has all the latest singing-and-dancing stuff but presumable will have singing-and-dancing prices too)

Ditto St Tropez stuff, rh - who sells that please?

OP posts:
Rumpel · 25/04/2007 19:55

Try ebay or Fake Bake website - google. Some shops sell it now too - maybe Debenhams or Frasers - not sure as it is trade that I buy.

MascaraOHara · 25/04/2007 19:55

L'Oreal Nutri-Summer you can get anywhere - boots tesco etc

I'm a red head and use the 'fair' one - If I use it religiously for a few days, everyone comments that I look, healthy/tanned etc..

Actually, at the moment I swear by it

MascaraOHara · 25/04/2007 19:56

Most of the hairdressers round my way sell FAke Bake now and nearly all the tanning salon's.. have a phone around

Rumpel · 25/04/2007 19:57

Im pure white with red hair too - fake bake works for me. Just my legs cos I LOVE pure white skin (legs are wobbly so makes them look slightly better).

rantinghousewife · 25/04/2007 19:59

WW, the boots website do the st tropez tinted moisturiser. They also sell it at the larger boots branches, as I'm near a small boots, I order mine from the web \link{www.boots.com}.

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 19:59

Found FakeBake here at what looks like a good price - will go off and look for yours now, MOH

If you put it on before you go to bed doesn't it rub off on the sheets though? Or do you have to stand, naked, motionless for several hours while it soaks in???

OP posts:
MascaraOHara · 25/04/2007 20:02

that's the only downside to Nutri summer it has quite a strong smell.. I do mine in the morning after my shower (inc exfoliation) and body brush (need dry skin) in the evening before bed.

WendyWeber · 25/04/2007 20:02

Being ejected from comp by DS2, will be back later, thanks all

Love Nutrishimmer at the moment too,I use the dark one but try the fair skin one,def no streaks! I have just bought the Nutrishimmer spray in Tesco on offer for £3.99.That is good too.
Do like the StTropez mousse or lotion, not at all orange but need to wash sheets daily!

Rumpel · 25/04/2007 20:31

It might rub off on the sheets but it will wash off. Take damp cotton wool and brush over dry bits knees, ankles, elbows after you appy it. Be carefula round your hairline too.

mosschops30 · 25/04/2007 20:33

St Tropez is fabulous (especially the mousse) as long as you moisturise and put it on with latex gloves.

However it only lasts 3-4 days max before it starts to come off, and if you're not re-applying then its really unattractive

Gingermonkey · 25/04/2007 21:42

I have a spray tan at a salon. It's the sun junkie one. I am very pale and it actually looks really natural! (honest, DH doesn't lie and he hates fake tan!). They do a lighter and a darker shade so you can choose which one you prefer. It lasts about a week. I have also used (ready for the list...)
Fake Bake - best for dark skin, comes out very dark, looks very silly on me
St Tropez - green undertones so can look orange
Sudo - similar to St Tropez.
Those were the sprays, now for the bottles...
Clarins - nice actually (and the salon one is even better because they put it on for you)
St Tropez in a bottle - mousse is ok but a bit orange on me
Johnson and JohnsonHoliday Skin - best of the tinted moisturisers
Dove - orange, smelt of biscuits
Piz Buin Mousse - not bad, bit biscuity smelling
There you go, that's my opinion! But you need to scrub, scrub, scrub first with an exfoliater, use a body brush as well and NO moisturiser before you apply fake tan or you will go streaky and yakky!

thequeenofcontradiction · 25/04/2007 23:47

Thanks all, will try the Nutri-summer and maybe fake bake when I'm not so broke.

I'm a ginger and usually love being pale, but am still carrying a bit (ahem) of pregnancy blubber so need the tan to look a bit more acceptable in this town of yummy mummies...

WendyWeber · 26/04/2007 08:59

gingermonkey, you are an expert!

Well I have some Johnsons so I will try that first - after exfoliating and with no moisturiser - if that works OK it'll be my best bet I think. (Or Nutrisummer...or Fake Bake...or St Tropez...aaaargh! Can I afford this?)

If not I will try a salon - your sun junkie one sounds good! Or the Clarins maybe.
