Hair extensions - answer to my prayers orbth road to ruin?

I am in my forties with thin hair which is getting thinner. I asked my hairdresser about her (very natural looking) hair extensions and they sounded great, low upkeep with bigger, better hair. I put down a deposit to come back and get a small amount put in but now I’m bottling it. Will they actually give me the thick, full mane I’ve alwafs wanted, or will they wreck my hair, pull it out and leave me even balder than I am now?

Advice pleeeeeease!!!!

Depends on the type you get. I would avoid bonded like the plague and go for micro rings as they cause no damage,

Ooh watching with interest!

I am in the same position.

Nothing really works to thicken it, have tried all the remedies, lotions and potions and have a dresser full of half used up products!

Micro rings done well are great, and you can keep it well maintained. Do make sure to give your hair periods of ‘rest’ though so the extensions don’t pull the roots too much.

Hi I had extensions 5 weeks ago for same reasons my hair thinning. My hair below shoulders so went for 20 inches so more length. They are not easy only wash my hair once a week use dry shampoo between. Takes couple hours between washing conditioning putting oil in then blow drying and curling with irons. But once done don't do much until next wash. Only one bond came out but it caught on my finger nail and I tugged it hard but only bond came out not hair. I have to have them taken out mid Feb as the hair grows need to be bonded near top again. Makes such a difference as could wear my hair down for 3-4 months before that as so thin. I am hoping in nine-12 months my hair will be thicker and longer to then have them removed. Got used to them quickly and forget it's not my own hair unless I touch my head and can feel them. I might get them cut on next visit 2 inches as it is long. But none of my hair has come out as a result of them so far. My advice would be try it and you can either cut them up if to long or have them removed if don't get on with them but for me it means I got long lovely head of hair I am now able to wear down.

My salon does Balmain keratin bonded hair extensions. Anyone got an ideas?

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2018 21:32

You need to look at all the types. So many now.

As said, micro rings are the best and your hair dresser will just move them every few weeks so your natural hair is always fine, they are the gentlest. It's just a tiny little ring slid onto your hair so nothing is glued on there or your scalp.

Thank you bluntness, that’s helpful

Daria32 · 08/01/2018 21:59

I love mine! Had them done two months ago. I only had 40 though- some people have 100+ And she cut them in half, so they’re finer
Because I had fewer extensions, there is no problem with looking after them and they look really natural. I didn’t have extra length, just volume - though hair does look longer because of the weight I think? They are so natural and everyone has commented on how nice my hair looks- with no idea that it’s not real!
I have hair like yours and I would recommend in a heart beat!!!

Atalune · 08/01/2018 22:10

daria what kind of extensions did you get?

Daria32 · 08/01/2018 22:30

I had micro bonds. Seriously, they are amazing. My hairdresser advises me that less is more, and because I have fine hair, she cut each one in half. It really looks so natural, you can’t see them because I have so few and my hair looks amazing (if I do say so myself!!)

Atalune · 08/01/2018 22:54

Where did you get them done? Could you PM me the salon or write it here? And how much did you pay?

I would love to see a before and after shot?!

Daria32 · 08/01/2018 22:57

I asked for word of mouth recommendations and the same name kept cropping up, so I rang her and had 2 consultations (as I was so nervous!)
Where are you based?

Atalune · 09/01/2018 08:47

I’m south west, but can and will travel!

sweetheart · 09/01/2018 10:46

Can I ask how much you all paid? i had hair extensions last year - they cost me in the region of £500 and only lasted well about 3 months. I was very dissapointed with them. I think maybe I had the wrong type so would be willing to try again if it wasn't so expensive!

heartshapedpositnotes · 11/01/2018 10:33

I've never had full on hair extensions as the costs are just too high. Instead, I buy clip in hair extensions, get the hairdresser to cut them to my natural hair length and pop them in and out every day, getting fresh ones cut in every time I get my hair cut (2-3 months).

A lot of people would find it too much hassle to take them out everyday but it works for me and you might find it a cheaper first step to get a feel for it.

Hershesons do lovely ethically sourced wefts that always get compliments from hairdressers for their quality. I use two pieces in my hair (£35 each) but they do regular 20-30% discounts. So the total costs of extensions for me are about 50 quid per quarter - bargain!

Hair extensions are completely worth it. I've used them all my adult life and couldn't be without them, my hairs so thin - they give me so much confidence. Ive never persoanlly used perminent ones becuase you can get something called traction allopecia (s?) If you use them for a long time Which I beleive could leave you with perminent bald spots. I was useing clip in extensions every day (for a good 10 years!) until I realised I could get traction allopecia from them too. I now use a halo style hair extention and it's changed my life! Takes 20 secconds to put in and take out, I can't feel it and as far as I'm awear causes no damage! I would defiantly go with the ones you've put the deposit down on and if you like having hair extensions then way up your different options for next time, see what suits you best! :)

heartshapedpositnotes · 11/01/2018 11:25

Oooh halo extensions look very interesting! Do they ever slip out?

ru345 · 14/01/2018 12:02
