Cardi type things to wear with smock type things?

What do you do when you're wearing one of these tunic / smock jobs and the weather turns a bit cold? I can't find a cardi that looks right with them. I have got the sort that's really just a smock top, with gathers above the bust and little puff sleeves, and one that's a short dress, again with gathers above the bust and then flaring out.

Ordinary cardies hang too short, and boleros don't look quite right either (although I have got one on now as I didn't know what else to do). In the winter I was wearing them with another top underneath but I want something I can take on and off.

I've been wearing my bolero cardi thing too, it looks ok.

FrannyandZooey · 24/04/2007 10:52

I think mine could be the wrong shape. It has one button at the bottom to fasten it, I think the little round ended sort with no buttons might have been better, more like a shrug

boleros/shrugs seem to be the way to go

MegaLegs · 24/04/2007 10:55

Yes mines more shruggy, no buttons and a rounded shape. Sort of follows the empire line of my smock tops.

krabbiepatty · 24/04/2007 10:55

Long loose jacket / light coat?

Enid · 24/04/2007 10:56

you can let it hang out he bottom

i have one on today (black and red floral, Pradamark) with a black crew neck button cardi over the top (Tescucci)

krabbiepatty · 24/04/2007 10:58

It's like that thing where people wore small black jumpers over long white shirts - a look I did not get.

KnayedFrot · 24/04/2007 11:03

I've got a sort of fine stretchy knit 3/4 sleeve cardi which looks OK over mine.

I think you just need to try a few different styles out.

The bolero type I always have problems with, they seem to hang off my shoulders miles away from my back

Startign to think I am developing a dowagers hump

FrannyandZooey · 24/04/2007 12:59

Hang out the bottom? God Enid that would look bizarre on me. You're quite petite aren't you? I would just look like I'd put all my clothes on at once, I think

I wear something like this (in black): trapeze cardy which is a bit shorter but looks OK, and I have just bought one of these jackets: linen swing jacket . Also a lightweight parka looks OK as well (lots around).

Agree lostinfrance, something awful and stunted about shrugs. Awful awful awful.

Awful.
very good t-rex analogy

princessmel · 24/04/2007 14:43

I was thinking this exact same thing F+Z. My shrugs only have short sleeves , which isn't very helpfull when I want to be warm, OR they have sparkles or sequins on trims and are too evening.

FrannyandZooey · 24/04/2007 14:59

Oh the trapeze cardy is fab - but forty quid? Just remembered I have a kind of bolero / swing cardy that looks fine with them - I think it's the one I have on now has a very square cut at the bottom and looks a bit iffy

I love them too Anniemac but don't have as many as I would like

Yes I may do that

I am kind of long and thin but my top half is a bit barrely compared to the bottom. A cute little buttoned up cardi looks bloody awful unless the hemline finished quite far above my waist

OP posts:
Aefondkiss · 24/04/2007 15:22

I was thinking this

but it has short sleeves, I do like it and I am still not sure what the answer is... short cardi is the consensus?

I like shrug/cropped cardi type things.Have quite a few of the tie front ones from Boden actually! The ones this year 3/4 sleeve fine knit so good for Summer.I think they look good tied under the bust, sort of give you shape IYSWIM.

FrannyandZooey · 24/04/2007 18:22

Anniemac I can't wear wraps either - lack of shape to my body.

Will look at Boden ST

Aefond I love that but it wouldn't look good on me. I would buy it if you like it - are we going to need long sleeves for much longer in the season?
