Grey hair - to dye or not?

Ok, I'm mid-thirties, under the current reddy-brown dye I'm about 40% silver-grey (was v. dark brown before starting dyeing hair), but the grey is quite patchy - more at the front than through the rest of it.
Currently have inch and a half of roots showing in a mouth-length bob (half way between chin and ear level).
Would letting the dye grow out and being natural hair colour make me look old before my time? ( have had comments before where friend's DH thought I was about 8 years older than i actually am, not exactly flattering). Can I make grey a conscious style choice or should I stick with the dye?

what is your colouring? if you tend to look washed out without makeup it probably wouldn't be good. if you are quite vibrant looking anyway it might be really nice.

mine has sort of stopped at 25% grey rest dull brown, wish it was more then i could dye the grey pale pink or something jolly.

Yes, grey is bad. I have dyed my hair for years (I'm 45). Even if it's a sort of nice grey it always makes women (and men) look older. I think more men should dye their hair. I think my brother should, not that I've told him that.

penmack · 24/04/2007 09:15

im about 60% gery (white actually) at only 33. if i dont die it i tend to look incredibly washed out. my natural hair colour is black but i have a very pale complection. it does depend on your skin tone

I know a woman in her 60s-70s who has a longish silver bob with the underneath section dyed purple - looks really striking.
I don't do make-up (or hair or fashion really come to that ) but colouring is dark eyes, pale freckly skin which blushes easily, quite strong features (i.e. largish mouth, largish nose).
Anyone know if a website where you can upload a photo of yourself and try out different hairstyles and colours?

I think that too Xenia, but I think men laugh at other men who do things like that. Whereas us women just think it's a sesible move.

Mog · 24/04/2007 09:20

sensible even

noddyholder · 24/04/2007 09:22

I am 42 and have no grey yet but will dye it when I do I think. But if it is a nice colour and in good condition it can look stunning. My dp loves it

Lullabyloo · 24/04/2007 09:22

Xenia...not so sure....my father had beautiful silver hair...very dashing..
His new lady friend has persuaded him to dye it & now he looks baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

ScottishThistle · 24/04/2007 09:23

Mid 30's is way too young to go with the grey look imo, I'm 34 & about 25% grey.

My Aunt who has very dark hair has a flash of grey in her fringe, she dyes it bright red & it looks fab!

ShrinkingViolet · 24/04/2007 09:24

an added complication is that DH is unlikely to go grey until he's a fair bit older, and I don't really want to look like I'm out with my toyboy.

not until I'm old enough to have a proper toy boy that is

Yes, dye it. There is nothing more ageing than grey hair and looking older than you are is not good for your confidence.

This is going to sound totally sexist and I am ashamed to say it but I prefer it if men don't dye their hair I think men tend to look more sophisticated and dashing with grey hair.

HuwEdwards · 24/04/2007 09:26

I think with only a few exceptionally attractive older women, that grey hair is the most ageing feature.

Judy1234 · 24/04/2007 09:50

Men need to get it properly and professional done and then it looks good. And no toupes.

ShrinkingViolet · 24/04/2007 10:01

so general consensus is - get rid of the grey?

ScottishThistle · 24/04/2007 10:05

I'd say so!

I've only ever came across 1 youngish Women (40ish) with very silver hair who looked terrific!

Lullabyloo · 24/04/2007 10:24
