Should you wear mini skirts to work?

I'm curious to discover others opinions on this. Generally to work I wear pencil skirts, but sometimes I prefer wearing the odd mini skirt to work. How appropriate for work would you say this is?

When wearing a mini skirt, I always wear tights (usually black) underneath. I work in sales so I have an office, but I generally am out and about during the day. Would you find an occasional mini skirt inappropriate in this setting?

I love a mini skirt for work Smile not in summer mind because of my white mottled legs but in winter with tights, boots (either flat knee high boots, ankle boots or docs). I think they suit me, probably helps that I'm quite short though so mini skirts often feel more in proportion? I love a pencil skirt but sometimes feel like I'm playing dress up in my mum's clothes! (I'm 36 by the way!). I work in an office but also public facing.

And although I often feel exploited at work, am definately not a stripper Grin

MuseumOfCurry · 31/12/2017 16:37

I do love a pencil skirt.

The problem with mini skirts is not so much when you're stood tall in front of the mirror but when you sit down and they're barely covering the tops of your thighs.

As a general rule I think if your sat and note if your thigh is covered by skirt than not, then you're ok.

bananafish81 · 31/12/2017 17:00

Only if you are a stripper/work in a female exploitative workplace that mandates revealing clothing/work in Avery fashionable/hip workplace (but only like once a year in the latter)

I work in the creative industries, frankly you'd need the vapours if you came into the companies I've worked for

I've never seen anyone wearing a pencil skirt in my office, because that would be dreadfully formal

I wear mini skirts, leather trousers, skinny jeans and trainers.

In the summer I wear tailored shorts as well. With bare legs!!

Amazingly I am still able to do my job and very well respected as a member of the sender management team

Scientist here and lots of minis about worn generally but not exclusively with opaques and flats.

Actually shoes are much more of an issue than any other kind of clothing because of safety. In some areas we need to wear safety shoes, but even in general areas we are expected to wear leather shoes that cover the top of the foot and are not allowed any heel above 2". Ballet pumps, stilettos, canvas trainers, or sandals are not allowed.

I personally wouldn't in my current workplace - I work in an office for a law firm. I think there are a few people that do but I don't really notice. Our dress code is 'smart business attire'. The shortest skirts I wear are suit-skirts that are just above my knees, and that is with black tights but not necessarily super-opaque ones. I am quite conservative in my dress in general though and very paranoid about it in work places.

In my old job I worked in a Students' Union office and I wore mini dresses and mini skirts and tailored shorts there with thick, dark tights quite a lot and quite a lot of the other women did as well, but the dress code was 'smart casual' so was more relaxed.

CountFosco · 31/12/2017 18:36

Museum that's not quite a work appropriate look is it Grin. She looks stunning for a night out though.

user1471451866 · 31/12/2017 18:44

Just make sure those thick black tights are still thick when you bed over! I wish I didn't know the detail of my colleague's flowery knickers!!

CountFosco · 31/12/2017 18:48

Surely we should all be bending our knees not our backs when we need to pick up something. Just tell your colleagues with flowery knickers they need some manual handling training.

user1471451866 · 31/12/2017 18:56

No training, but not picking up anything heavier than an envelope! She was made aware, thought the problem was the knickers rather than the tights!

bananafish81 · 01/01/2018 01:39

Tailored shorts wise, again I work in a very casual office, so actually not a million miles away from that picture, though that's definitely too dressy. One of the C suite will wear shorts, t shirts and trainers from about June till Oct. The rest of the year it's the same but with jeans instead of shorts! Tech companies are more casual casual than business casual Wink

I only ever wear a high neck plain t shirt and flats with my tailored shorts, never heels

Similar ish sort of look to these

Winter staple is my leather skirt with thick black tights and flat ankle boots - something a bit like these pics. I'm sure this wouldn't be appropriate work wear for many people's offices. But in mine this sort of look is very very common, so no one would bat an eyelid at a mini skirt

@bananafish81 tech companies being casual casual, yup I know what you mean. DH (software engineer) thinks he's smart if none of his clothes have holes in them. I like all the outfits you've linked to, and see similar at work the whole time (well, a more dressed down version with flat shoes but fashion bloggers don't seem to do flats) although I think you live somewhere warmer than me, shorts would require tights round here and also are not really allowed in the labs (although skirts with bare legs are allowed much to the men's annoyance).

AlyTab · 01/01/2018 11:18

Wish I could be dressed a bit more casual for work, especially when one of the gps I often pitch sales to was wearing shorts when I saw him 2 months ago. Wasn't even warm.

Definitely bend at the knees!
