Matte lipstick haters - have you ever found a matte lipstick you quite like?

I find most matte lipsticks terribly drying and uncomfortable to wear. I prep my lips by using a lip scrub and plenty of lip balm but no matter what, by middle of the afternoon, they feel dry and hideous. One exception is Essence matte lipsticks, which are cheap as chips (about £3), last for hours and are lovely and creamy

Any other brands that fellow dry-lipped people rate for mattes?

I like Mac Velvet Teddy, which I think is matte (although I may be completely wrong as I'm not a huge lipstick wearer!).

I got a Clinique pop matte in a gift set and it was fine but possibly not as matte as other bands

Nope, not one. Maybe the NYX soft matte lip creams but haven't had chance to properly test yet.

My main requirement is to be able to add another layer halfway through the day without it causing the original layer to bobble up, go all rough and flake off. That's the problem with them imo, and they're so long lasting it's a huge faff to properly remove and start over midway through the day.

And so many look like a cats bum.

Much prefer satin or sheen lips, tinted balms, crayons, or gloss.

I second your recommendation for the Essence Matt lipsticks. They're fabulous for the price. The No. 7 Matt crayons are also not drying.

The only problem is that there are few colours available.

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution

Besame, but mainly if you want red (there isn't a huge selection). They say their lipsticks aren't matte but to all intents and purposes they are. They're non-drying, wear very well and you can touch up without bobbling. besamecosmetics.com/

I wear Bobbi Brown sandwash pink daily. It's not drying at all and has great staying power, fairly neutral too.

User556 · 14/12/2017 00:44

I quite like the Satin finishes of MAC although I don’t mind the mattes
Charlotte tilbury mattes are good too

Lottapianos · 14/12/2017 07:42

Have tried Charlotte Tilbury and MAC and they're fine to start with but go horribly dry after a few hours.

I have a NYX matte lipstick which is really lovely, but it's not matte, more like a demi matte. Maybe I just need to accept that mattes are not for me 😕

Have you tried a lip primer? I always found pretty much all matte lipsticks to be somewhat drying. I used MAC lip primer beforehand (it needs a minute or two to properly set before you can apply lipstick). Lipstick not only lasts longer, it feels much more comfortable.

Humphriescushion · 14/12/2017 08:23

I love Huda lipsticks. Quite long lasting ( lipsticks never last long with me so this is quite good) and the colours are lovely and not drying at all. They are available in sephora in france - not much help to you sorry. But i think they are available online and at selfridges. I have quite q few colours and they are lovely.

Auldspinster · 14/12/2017 08:25

Revlon mattes are good.

Scabbersley · 14/12/2017 08:25

Yes! I think it's matte. It's the benefit one that comes free with cosmo this month. It's bright pink with a darker bit to 'line' your lips and I love it!

Cheesymonster · 15/12/2017 07:58

I like the NYX lip lingerie. I have two of the soft matte lip creams and I really wanted to like them but I found them drying and also too bright, even the nudes.

CointreauVersial · 15/12/2017 09:01

NYX Matte Lipstick - nice texture, long lasting, doesn't dry my lips out at all. And cheap!

RiskIt4Biscuit · 15/12/2017 14:36

I like Mac, Charlotte Tilbury and the Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm. They are all very similar IMO.
Marc Jacobs liquid lipstick is also nice, but it is quite expensive for what it is. Colourpop ultra satin lipsticks are just as good.
I am not a fan of the NYX version as the one I have is very drying and is too scented.
Colourpop Ultra matte are very drying IME.

Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Lipstick are also very good. It's a liquid lipstick, but not like a traditional liquid lipstick that sets on the lips. I have a bright pink one, and because of the finish of the lip product, it is very wearable.
It is quite thin when you apply it, it sets and stains the lips - my experience is that it lasts all day. If it feels dry, I add a lip balm (the NUXE balm in the glass pot is matte).
You can see it here: www.johnlewis.com/yves-saint-laurent-tatouage-couture-liquid-lipstick/p3330338?colour=11%20Rose%20Illicite
I have only tried one colour, so I don't know if they are all the same, but you could look for reviews and swatches online.
