What colour/type of tights to wear with a black dress?

I've got two Christmas parties this year. I have a lovely black dress which is just above knees.

It's a bit swishy/flowy with sparkly bits on the top.

I'm a size 16 and and my legs are awful and I cannot go out with bare legs. Plus no amount of fake tan can make them look half decent!

Do I wear thick black tights or sheer black tights. Or should I wear the amazing M&S tights that are a suntan colour that perfect your legs, and you can't tell you have tights on.

Are black tights a bit 80's or still ok.

I would wear fairly sheer black tights - they look more dressy than opaques and the light/shadow contrast is flattering if your legs aren't as slim as you'd like them to be.

Oh, I'd wear the bare/suntanned tights or opaque depending on the dress's fabric. Can't get into sheer black.

To go with a party dress I'd say the M&S ones. No-one should be in bare legs at this time of year but nude tights will look dressier than opaques.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 01/12/2017 19:08

Would fishnets work? I think they look very flattering and are a bit more interesting...

Greenteandchives · 01/12/2017 19:11

Definitely not thick tights with a sparkly swishy evening dress. Wear the sheer black ones. 'Nearly black' are what I would wear.

Chewbecca · 01/12/2017 19:41

Yes! Fishnets! They're the answer.

NameChange30 · 01/12/2017 19:42

Nude

Mulberrysilk · 01/12/2017 20:01

Get a pair of black opaque and a pair of black sheer. Forget the nude. Try the dress and shoes on with on leg in each pair. You'll know which to go for as soon as you see them on. I think fishnets would be too busy when the dress has sparkly bits.

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 01/12/2017 20:03

Nude, but good ones. Not any kind of American Tan

ShirleyPhallus · 01/12/2017 20:05

Suntan M&S. Also do try st tropez sometimes because it genuinely doesn’t look like fake tan!

Sheer black tights always remind me of Debbie McGee and Cher circa 1996

Thankful no one has suggested coloured tights yet, definitely one to avoid!

RhiannonOHara · 01/12/2017 20:08

Nude fishnets.

It would depend on what shoes. If black shoes then I'd wear black tights. If not I'd wear skin colour tights

LittleWingSoul · 01/12/2017 20:32

I always think sheer black tights look quite unflattering! Even on the most slender pair of pins.

Maybe it's a personal thing as I am a 60 denier (or higher) black tight wearer all winter-long as not a trousers person

PaxUniversalis · 01/12/2017 20:36

Could you post a photo of the dress and the shoes?

neveradullmoment99 · 01/12/2017 20:40

I agree with littlewing. Tights that are sheer are not as slimming as opaques. I think 60 denier are just right,

Ttbb · 01/12/2017 20:41

I would go for the suntan ones. Sheer black tights have a tendency to make legs look really lumpy.

LittleWingSoul · 01/12/2017 21:06

Plus you can get away without hair removal when wearing a high denier Wink Grin

Lucked · 01/12/2017 21:28

I wear 40 denier for nights out, I only wear higher denier during the day with more casual outfits, I do agree that barely black tights are tricky, and only work on people have amazing legs that always look good.
