Pearls

I’m helping a friend buy a gift for his partner and he is thinking of getting a string of pearls. He’s seen some lovely ones - but I said let me check with mumsnet whether women in their mid 30s are wearing strings of pearls these days. Is it just me who associates them with our mums’ generation? Thanks Mumsnet style experts!

My great aunty left me two strings of white seed pearls and some earrings.
I love them.
They were her mother's before her and are about 130 years old.

I am early 30s and wear my pearl necklace often. It's short, white and delicate. It helps soften super sharp necklines and tailoring a treat. Go for it!

bingolittle · 26/11/2017 20:53

Seen a couple of friends recently, one wearing grey pearl earrings and another wearing a grey pearl solitaire-type pendant.

Just devastatingly sophisticated-looking. I was gnashing my teeth with envy.

Gah81 · 26/11/2017 20:58

And if we're talking pearls generally, I wear some kind daily. I think they light up my face and go with everything. I usually alternate between:

Mikimoto pearl studs that belonged to my grandmother
Double pearls and gold (earrings)
Floating single pearl (short gold or silver chains)

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/11/2017 20:58

Pearls have been on trend for the last few seasons although worn in a more contemporary way rather than classic.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 26/11/2017 20:59

I think it's less to do with age and more yo do with style. I love pearls and inherited a gorgeous necklace from my grandma but have worn them twice in 15 years because aside from the 2 weddings I've been to I never wear anything they would go with.

TheRealPrincessMeghan · 26/11/2017 21:20

Selfish place marking sorry rude

JessieJams · 26/11/2017 21:41

Oooh have just been looking at pearl earrings (white) but hesitating in fear that they might be a little old lady like. Would grey be more modern? Off foranother browse!

JoJoSM2 · 26/11/2017 22:52

JessieJams, I think pearl stud are fine. When it comes to colour, dark pearls might be an idea if your hair is blond. Otherwise, I’d go with paler ones.

My DD has to dress up as a granny in a school play and I've suggested we get her pearls and a granny diamanté jumper, enough said

Roomba · 27/11/2017 00:16

Definitely a matter of personal taste, though I understand they are becoming very fashionable again with younger people. I wouldn't thank you for a pearl necklace, they remind me of my Granny. But that's just because they weren't 'in' when I grew up I suppose.

Feawen · 27/11/2017 13:44

I like the idea of a short string of pearls, or several twisted together, peeking out from under a collar - but then I like preppy looks generally. A more understated way of wearing pearls would be the single pearl as a pendant described above.

It depends on your style and personality though - on one person pearls work as part of a vintage-with-a-current-edge style, but on a very conservative or classic dresser they might look old fashioned.

My trendy, quirky grandma wears oversized pearl stud earrings but wouldn't wear a string of pearls because they're old fashioned. I would wear a string of pearls because to me they're stylishly vintage.

I’m late 30s and wouldn’t wear a string of pearls but I do have a silver necklace with a single drop black pearl with I love.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 27/11/2017 13:51

I'm 36. I have several strands of pearls and lots of cheap pearl studs and some lovely earrings. DH has bought me pearls twice and I adore them.

It is definitely a personal taste though, as none of my friends wear them.

BenLui · 27/11/2017 14:06

I agree with others, it’s not age, it’s personal taste and style.

I’ve been happily wearing pearls since I got my first string as a teenager from my grandparents.

None of my friends wear pearls but mine are often admired.

I wear pretty formal tailored suits for work and they look wonderful with them. I don’t tend to wear them with casual clothes though any more than I’d wear my diamonds with casual clothes.

They are a bold choice if he’s not sure though.

TinyPawz · 27/11/2017 14:08

I wear pearls for special occasions.

TinyPawz · 27/11/2017 14:08

Oops should also mention that I am mid 30's

WhyteKnyght · 27/11/2017 14:40

I've got a couple of strings of pearls that I was given as a bridesmaid, along with a bracelet and stud earrings. I tend to wear them with quite formal outfits, balldresses or wedding guest dresses.

WhyteKnyght · 27/11/2017 14:40

Should have said that I'm in my 30s.

Loctite · 27/11/2017 15:39

I love pearls and have worn them on and off for years. I am mid-40's now.

I love fresh water pears strung on leather or grey / black pearls.

I don't like fake pearls (for myself - don't care what anyone else wears!)

I would love to be given a sting of pearls and would view them as an heirloom for dd, the same as my other jewellery.
