Additional ear piercing - what? Where?

buzzbobboo · 23/11/2017 14:01

I had regular ear lobe piercing aged 12. I’m 41 now, and have been toying with more. I like the idea of something else in my ear in which I could wear a little diamond or gold stud or ring, something very shiny.

Any suggestions of where in my ear might look good? And one ear or both?

I have a rather respectable job, I’m not very cool, I don’t have or want tattoos and I am quite boring. This appeals as a tiny little rebellion against everything I am, without being very radical at all 😂

I had a double forward helix done a course of weeks ago (36th birthday present to myself) - so happy with the results!

That’s so pretty! That’s kind of what I want - a small sparkly stud somewhere. I found out the one part way up the ear (lower than helix) is called an auricle and I’m going to look into that.

I’m such a strait-laced person that I’ll umm and aah about this for ages even though I think it’s pretty and not that radical really.

They’re so pretty banana. Do they get caught if you comb your hair though? That’s my biggest fear.

bananafish81 · 24/11/2017 10:25

Not caught it when brushing my hair, only thing I have to be careful of is when I put my hair up in a turban after washing it, that the towel doesn't catch the stud. Oh and when I'm constantly whipping my headphones off my head and around my neck when I'm out and about, I just have to remember to take them off with both hands to pull them off and away from my ears, instead of just dragging them down (and pulling my ear down with them)

Which tbh are both easy and generally sensible!

I'd recommend not having it done on the side you sleep on - I always sleep on my right so had it done on my left ear

Got mine done at Maria Tash in Liberty - I now want to get matching rose gold teeny studs for my lobes, so I can use the second hole in the lobe of my other ear, and be all matching with delicate pretty shiny things Grin

I have a photo of mine as I've just changed the earrings over if you wanted some inspiration

I actually went to town to get my helix pierced today and the bloody place was shut!

Last time I do something impromptu! (Well I might try again tomorrow...)

CountessofGrantham · 27/11/2017 19:42

What sort of price are we looking at for these piercings? I have no clue and the websites don’t help!

bananafish81 · 27/11/2017 19:49

@CountessofGrantham the piercing itself was cheap, it was the jewelry that was pricey for me, because I had it done at Maria Tash, so the cost was the diamond!

The helix piercing itself was £20, but the earrings were substantially more!

The place I had my navel done has a price list, and as you're not buying fine jewelry, but a basic stud or barbell, the total cost is obviously much less

Jonsnowsghost · 27/11/2017 19:51

Mine were all £20 including the "starting" plain earrings apart from the helix which was £15. I want another but not sure where to go!

MulberryPeony · 27/11/2017 20:28

I’ve recently got an upper lobe/lower auricle piercing in just one ear. I like it and as mine didn’t end up in cartilage as easy one to heal.

gonnabreakmyrustycage · 27/11/2017 20:33

I was going to suggest going on the Maria Tash instagram page for ideas. Their curated ears are dreamy

fruityb · 27/11/2017 20:59

I’ve just been on there - so pretty

fairgame84 · 27/11/2017 21:09

I'd love more piercings but I had a really bad experience with my tragus and it's put me off any more. First tragus got infected so I took it out and let it heal. I got it done again 4 years later and it got infected again so I gave up. I was super clean with it as I'm a nurse and shit hot with infection control but for some reason it just didn't work out.
I love the look of the helix piercings.
I've currently got 2 on each lobe and one on the right rim.

fruityb · 28/11/2017 17:07

Helix pierced! Decided against forward as my hair would cover it too much. Helix done and feels fine - I might go get another one tomorrow lol

Jonsnowsghost · 28/11/2017 17:24

Fruity - that's how I ended up with all mine, they're addictive!

fruityb · 28/11/2017 18:28

I’m betting it’ll be at least a week before my husband notices. Probably not even then lol

HildaZelda · 28/11/2017 19:47

@bananafish81, I love yours. Would love a forward helix but my ear is too small/thin to get it done.

IslingtonLou · 28/11/2017 20:11

I have loads of ear piercings (lobes and various helix) but my favourite are my snug and rook. You can get pretty bars too (neither pic are me haha)

bananafish81 · 28/11/2017 20:34

@HildaZelda thank you! I would have loved a triple forward helix, but it was questionable whether there would even be room for a double. The piercer did the first one and said she'd then evaluate whether there was sufficient room for a second, once the first stud was in place (which it turned out there was(. She said very few people had the very specific anatomy required to have a triple

buzzbobboo · 30/11/2017 12:36

So I’ve been wearing an ear cuff as a helix for the past few days which is super pretty and I’ve been getting lovely comments but I keep catching it with my hair and my glasses, and I tried lying on it and can’t!

So not sure it’s what I want for my first fancy piercing.

Mulberrypeony - I like the sound of yours a lot. I like the look of the auricle piercing and it looks like my cartilage starts quite high up (I have a high ratio of lobe to cartilage!) so it could be a simple lobe piercing like yours.

ElspethFlashman · 30/11/2017 15:48

I recently got a forward helix. Funnily enough, nobody has noticed! I think cos my hair is a bit frizzy in front of my ear and so the piercing is literally obscured by frizz.

But I like that when I look in the mirror I can see it. I was going to go for a Rook until I realised I'd never see it!

First two weeks I couldn't sleep on that side at all. But I could after about 4 weeks.

Mines a plain silver ball but I'm going to swap it out for a cubic zirconia tiny stud (Maria Tash style), after 3 months.

TidyLike · 01/12/2017 19:28

These are mine: lobe and snug in the left ear, then multiple lobe, helix, and scaffold piercings in the right. I think helix piercings are so widespread now that nobody bats an eyelid at them in smart contexts.
