I've just got back from five days in Le Marais, and I've decided I want become Parisian, s'il vous plait.

So there.

EVERYBODY looked fantastic. EVERYBODY. DP and I just sat open-mouthed in fascination. Whatever their age, they looked amazing.

So I'm sitting here on a diet, wearing an Isabel Marant jumper and frantically googling 'How to turn French.'

As far as I can tell, the rules are:

  1. Be thin, despite the fact you are walking down the street at 11am gnawing a cheese and ham baguette the length of your forearm.
  1. Have your hair the colour and texture of natural hair.
  1. Have the most amazing skin, despite the fact you have a permanent Gauloise on the go.
  1. Never get pissed and lairy, despite the fact you are having a glass of red wine with your lunch and it's Tuesday.
  1. Wear shoes you can walk in.
  1. Have an amazing coat.
  1. Know how to tie a scarf so it looks like you have slung it on and it's just choosing to snuggle up to you because you are SO FRICKING GORGEOUS.
  1. Have a pharmacy on every corner that is just an Aladdin's Cave of miraculous skincare delights for less than a tenner each.

Anyone else have any tips? Joking aside, I loved the style - the shops, ohmigod the shops! It was like I'd walked into my internet shopping history.

I could actually walk around in my biker jacket without feeling like a twat.

I want to be French. Aidez-moi.

I'm catching up on peaky blinders before watching the new series and this character has black smokey eyes and a redder lip instead of a nude which I am loving.

mrsrhodgilbert · 22/11/2017 20:55

Yes I agree that scarf is badly finished off, I've done a bit of sewing in my time. If it were mine I'd unpick the sewing that goes across the fur and finish it off neatly, if I could be bothered. When you're wearing it that won't show.

Tanaqui · 22/11/2017 21:45

I'd send your photo to the supplier and see if they will replace/ refund?

EnidButton · 22/11/2017 21:57

Thank you all for the scarf stitch opinions. Think the vote is for wonky rather than way of finishing. Perhaps it is both. I could unpick and my Mam could finish it off so it doesn't come undone. You are right, it won't ever be noticed either way. Not 100% about keeping it yet, need to try it on with different things and flounce about in front of the mirror before deciding.

Bella You do look French! Lovely! Really like your eye make up.

I had something to say but it's completely gone now. I was distracted by the lovely eye make up. Grin

EnidButton · 22/11/2017 22:00

Toss I love your scarf. Gorgeous colours. Big big fan of short red nails too.

TossDaily · 22/11/2017 22:08

I've been trying different ways to tie it and posing in front of the mirror. I'm pleased with it.

I just hope it doesn't make me look more like an eccentric Great Aunt which I am than a sophisticated Parisienne...

I am just reading through the thread, which I love too. Mrs Hodgilbert you mentioned jackets with a twist, and tweed. Here is another lovely tweed jacket made in the UK by Liberty Kelly libertykelly.com/collections/jackets

janetheimpaler · 23/11/2017 10:24

Place saving here. Love this thread, thank you botemp! I was at the Dior exhibition a few weeks ago. Mind blowing exhibition design, but numbers of visitors could be better staggered, lots of bottlenecks at corners where people were reading signage - maybe they should have been placed elsewhere. I have photos of my Favourite clothes, if I can figure out how to post them.

quirkychick · 23/11/2017 16:30

Toss that's a lovely scarf. I envy you being able to pull off those gorgeous autumnal colours.

Spudlet · 23/11/2017 19:05

I love that scarf Toss! They have some gorgeous ones on there, will be keeping it in mind for next year when I want a light one for my summer holidays.

I got a red lipstick today - took me an embarrassingly long time to choose but I think I like the result.

DHs main comment was that it matches my scarf, which I think is a good thing? Grin

botemp · 23/11/2017 23:16

quirky, yes the Belgians are similar about food. If anyone ever visits Antwerp and wants and amazing meal go to 'Het Gebaar', it's only open for lunch and it's beyond delicious. The chef is originally a pastry chef (and the desserts are beyond amazing, do not skip, skip dinner instead as you'll be stuffed) and his approach to savoury food is like that of a pastry chef. Best to reserve ahead as it's in a tiny little Swiss cottage that was part of the medicinal garden of a (still functioning) hospital, it's a lovely little oasis in the middle of the city. Like most Belgian restaurants they're child-friendly, they just only have a choice of pancakes or pancakes.

mrshod, I should probably point out I break rank with the French when it comes to bags. It's where the architect in me comes out more pronounced, I like minimal, contemporary, well crafted bags. Pic 1 is my most recent purchase and am heavily dithering over getting Pic 2 but can't figure out in which colour (it's currently between navy, burgundy and boring black, the pic is in brick which I also sort of like but don't think I'll like in RL) but it's on BF offer so can only dither until tomorrow night. Pic 3 is the bag I wore out today (but I have a limited edition version that I can't find pics for, it's somewhat different but the same model).

I used to buy one nice bag every few years or so (usually in celebration, achievement or similar, connected to something special or worth remembering) but I feel the prices have gone crazy in recent years. The RRP have been increasing at such high rates it's become a little insane and the flip side is that so many discount their bags to 70% or they all end up in outlets. It used to be impossible to wait out the sales and hope for a 30% discount, these days you easily can, even in popular colours like black. I think it's tainted the 'value' of these bags twice over and a lot of brands have gone down the drain quality wise along with it. I much preferred the more accessible RRP with minimal discounts than what we have now so I've been gravitating much more towards new talent recently (provided it's manufactured in Europe, preferably Italy or France, though there's a bit of allowance for South Korea) than the established old guard and I'm really enjoying what I'm discovering.

So in conclusion, for the true French/Parisian look you're best off not following my style (although pic 3 is quite a popular style there) but happy to talk benches any time Grin I have a lead on some great Italian bags at more accesible prices (I usually maintain a high minimum threshold to avoid just buying lots of throwaway bags and put it all towards one or two good bags, not saying it's impossible to get a good bag with great design at lower price point but it's far harder a chore and I may very well break my own rules over these bags).

Enid, similar to LE is Monika Blunder. There's also Harry does Makeup (but haven't really watched that in a really long time). There's also a French model Pardon My French but she's co-opted a bit by lots of sponsors (think she uses Revlon or similar exclusively per a modeling campaign contract) and a lot of it is youtube nonsense. Don't think she's been active for a good while either.

jane, I absolutely loved that exhibition, suddenly it all became so clear to me that the original CD worked in such close relation with B&W photography, it was made for the lens, not life, that's why the silhouettes are that striking. It's funny since we're seeing a bit of a resurgence of that in recent times with Instagram and why there are so many bonkers items out there specifically made to catch the eye of the viewer on Instagram, more colour and texture based but an interesting parallel. Of course, CD did it much much better.

Uploading pics depends on what platform you're on, on mobile it's the little attachment paperclip button, I don't use the app so not sure how to do that one, desktop is pretty easy to spot and self-explanatory. If you're a new user I think they were changing the rules that didn't allow them to upload pictures for a certain time period or number of posts.

Oh, and because I'm free to rant about it here, I will. I found a magical scarf... seriously it's magical and therefore stupidly expensive. A 100% cashmere one did I not mention never seeing the point of those and from Isabel Marant, the stupid expensive main line. Argh... it made me look so good and as if I was looking in one of those deceiving mirrors, there was waifish tall me. The thing is bloody more expensive than the bag I'm dithering over and it's a light cream almost pinkish beige colour, ever so practical. I'm insane. If I can blur my face I shall show you all a pic and you can all confirm my insanity.

I need to see the magical scarf in action please.

I love that 3rd bag. It looks like very soft leather. Thanks for the YT suggestions bo. I'll have a browse tomorrow.

quirkychick · 24/11/2017 06:59

botemp I love that middle bag, I think I prefer not very structured bags (mostly). I agree that some bags are just silly prices, and not as if I can even think about affording them, I have usually not bought labelled bags (if that makes sense) or mid range prices eg. I have an everyday, brown crossbody from a local leather shop, so well made but not a known brand.

HolgerDanske · 24/11/2017 07:19

I’m with you on the Birkin, Botemp. I wouldn’t say no to one were it gifted to me, naturally, but I don’t suppose it would actually fit my lifestyle or my style very well. I think I’d keep it to just lovingly admire from time to time and appreciate in value. I don’t particularly like the OTT celebrity connections to it either.

I am a big handbag lover so I do have quite a few. But they range from mid to high range high street to very good quality to mid range designer. I love the Hermes Evelyne, it’s a very usable, subtle, relaxed bag. Much prefer it to the Birkin. I’ve just bought my first Longchamp not too long ago and have my eye on another (although 2018 is supposed to be no-spend so it’ll be a while before I can have it).

I think it’s better not to be too try-hard with bags, really.

botemp · 24/11/2017 08:02

I like a distinctive bag Holger, just not a Birkin. I think I also don't like that those that own them usually have more than one, a giant collection even. It's my equivalent of go buy a bench moment because there's little sense to them to me and it's too easily bandied about as this must have bag. It's just really well known and that's mostly down to the price tag. It's beautifully made and all that but it just doesn't do a thing for me.

Ok, blurring out your own face is really disturbing and I'm not convinced it does much beyond turn me creepy... Am also wearing my new blazer/jacket which I bought in the Antwerp private sales from Haider Ackerman. I think it may be synergistic magic going on with that. The colours are a bit off on my phone, the second pic is more representative of the colour of the scarf.

Am a bit of a nervous wreck this morning as I just got an offer for 30% off on all luxury brands including IM, assuming that department stores had already announced all their offers earlier in the week, which makes it less insane but still insane. Farfetch are doing it at half off but it has two very thick black horizontal stripes just above the fringe and it's ruined it for me. Do I wait for better sales come January and risk losing it (likely) or be a little less insane and leave the bag for now? Argh! I'd so vowed not to get tangled into BF madness and here I am.

On the up side, it did settle my dithering on the Stole as I saw that again after and lovely as it is, it's just too big for me. Tried it over the one shoulder with the belt and it just needed to be slightly less wide for me. I love it but I'd never end up wearing it. I did really like the green cropped fur one with my new jacket which is sort of an olive grey and that brings out the green in it, Parfois is doing 20% off so may just be sensible and just get that instead.

I've just got back from five days in Le Marais, and I've decided I want become Parisian, s'il vous plait.

Gonegrey31 · 24/11/2017 08:25

That scarf is divine ! Just beautiful and the plain version will be timeless. You yourself have described it as "magical ". Go for it !

HolgerDanske · 24/11/2017 08:57

Absolutely, a bag should be interesting! I love them and get a lot of pleasure from them.

HolgerDanske · 24/11/2017 09:02

Love love love your jacket, and the scarf goes beautifully with it! You must have it.

littleredlipstick · 24/11/2017 10:29

That scarf Botemp is gorgeous! Looks so snuggly and warm

botemp · 24/11/2017 10:34

I honestly don't think I'd care if it scratched like sandpaper and failed to keep me warm. Shite, I'm pathetic.

Spudlet · 24/11/2017 14:19

You look like yoire in thr witness protection prgramme with your face blurred botemp, but an exceedingly well-dressed one! That scarf is lovely. It looks very snuggly.

botemp · 24/11/2017 15:03

More like a criminal, Spudlet!

Janet, I love it! I may just need to get it, I've been in a white t-shirt obsession for a while now. I'll have to look it up but I think it was in the Guardian how the French have a counter trend to all these French slogan tees with bad English grammar ones. Reminded me of the hilarious translations in China.

ProperLavs · 24/11/2017 16:44

Great post on bags. I don't understand bags. I have a couple of beloved leather bags I haggled hard for in Marrakech a few years ago, but they are looking ropey.
I have a dread of looking like I have a handbag and therefore looking old lady.
I need to up my game. However I simply son't have money to spare on anything over £50 really.

EnidButton · 24/11/2017 17:03

I love it but I'd never end up wearing it.

I'm feeling the same about the stole unfortunately. It's just too big for me. Not sure how to return it but going to try.

Very nice outfit altogether bo. Really like your jacket. Buy the scarf.
