Cheap or expensive leather jacket??

I ordered a leather jacket in the Sainsburys 25% off sale, and it has arrived, and is fine. Not brilliant, but fine - on the positive side it doesn't look too cheap, on the negative it has quite irritating flappy lapels.

However, I'd previously tried on an All Saints jacket - the oversized one - and fell very much in love. Lovely leather, very much "me" in terms of how it looks. But it is £420 and the Sainsburys one is £74.50. - so 5 1/2 times as much, and the most I've ever paid for an item of clothing. On the other hand, if I wear it for many many years because its so lovely it would be worth it. Aargh....

Biker jackets are very in this year but will they be next year? Yes leather lasts a long time but the styles dont. I’d get a medium to cheap price one and enjoy the trend whilst it lasts.

I bought a Jaeger leather jacket from their online shop sale, with an extra discount added on - paid c.£145 in the end. Great quality and cut.

Might be worth a trawl through some of the more high-end ranges sales to see if there is a jacket the catches your eye at a lower price? Have fun choosing.

You could always wait until your size balances out op before buying a really spendy one. I bought a cheap one last year to try the style. I almost bought an expensive one as a treat for losing quite a bit of weight, I'm glad I didn't as I've since lost another stone and the one I bought is swimmingly big on me now. I think buying expensive is great if you've been that same size for a while...or of course if the cost is absolutely no issue.

I was desperate for an All Saints one after everyone raved about them but they did nothing for me and I'm very happy with a beautiful butter soft leather Mango one

I bought a Rick Owens an age ago and it was and is worth every single penny
My advice is spend what you can on it as It can last a lifetime

I was exactly the same last year, bought the Sainsbury’s one thinking if I wore it loads and loved it I’d splash out the year after. I do like it but wear it a lot less than I thought I would, maybe because it always seems to be raining where I live!
Glad I didn’t splurge

How about second hand but good quality and not too worn? I got a ted baker on ebay like that a couple of weeks ago as have a good idea of what size I fit with them. There was only one other bidder and I got it for less than £30 delivered and already worn in! Absolutely love it so worth a look around. Agree with @Leo35 also you can get good deals if you look around. So I would say get as good quality as you can for your money

Huge congratulations on your massive weight loss - that is huge achievement. I am not in UK and my leather jacket was the most expensive thing I have ever bought but is soft lovely quality and I adore it!

I had a personal styling appointment recently and was advised to get a cheap leather jacket to start with, then invest later if got on with it.

Invest in the All Saints if it’s a classic.

Just clicked on this, and realised it was a zombie thread from 2017, but one that I'd actually started! For those of you who are interested, I bought the oversized All Saints one and have never regretted it - have worn it a lot. Sadly, due to lockdown, I've put on a bit of weight, but getting back to a point where I can zip it up is one of the things that motivates me!

My DN got an All Saints on in TK Maxx for £100. Might be worth a rummage.

Ellapaella · 18/10/2020 09:36

I was the same as you OP and then got an Allsaints one last year which was a game changer. Allsaints always start doing offers around this time of year, usually you can get 15% if you sign up for emails as a new customer and they often start doing 20% nearer to Christmas. The sales are great as well if you can wait.
