hating the fashion thats around right now

I love bold prints, I love retro gear. I absolutely loath these smock tops that all seem to have the same neckline, ie really unflattering if you are well stocked with norkage, and not tall.

I could not find a single top that could show off my cleavage when i went shopping on sat. Necklines were all high, straight across.

I lok pregnant anyway, those tops make it all hang out and i look even more pregnant.

Also hating the leggings thing, i want cheap o clothes, ie newlook, etc, but want something thats not just designed for an 18 yr old.

feel better now, thanks!

I hate some of the fashions around now too. Like what's with the hair? Side partings which are so far down the side they look like comb overs. Ludicrous.

I quite like the smocks though especially over trousers. A Godsend for the fuller hips and rounder tums.

paulaplumpbottom · 09/04/2007 22:12

Me to. I've got beautiful breast (all mine) why would I want to cover them up with a smock?

FrannyandZooey · 09/04/2007 22:12

Plenty of low necklines around IME - designed to be layered but you could wear them without

look in topshop they have smocks with low necks

but I kind of agree with you - we were out today and saw a heck of a lot of identical looking swirly tunics that were not at all flattering to the wearers

it is nice when fashion is a bit more individual and less photokit

pirategirl · 09/04/2007 22:13

the smocks just make me look like I'm hiding summat horrible!!!
i'm a 14, and 5ft 3, and my legs are large, the tops just accentuate it all.

you are right - it's all crap - i have no norks to speak of, but equally no dsire to look pregnant - i ordered loads of stuff from next - all billowing rubbish and george was the same - i've just decided to buy little cardigans - eg asda £6 and trendy sleeves and wear with last years vests!

saadia · 09/04/2007 22:20

I don't like those short jackets and cape-type things - I think they look ridiculous. Some people will wear anything as long as they're told it is fashion.

lackofgravitas · 09/04/2007 22:49

Smocky things can work, but the fit's got to be a bit unusual - I have one from Debenhams (Red Herring, I think) which actually ties under my boobs without showing off my entire bra. Given that I'm a G cup, that's a lot of fabric above the tie, I can't imagine there are many women it actually fits. Sadly I also have a Dorothy Perkins one that doesn't fit over the boobs, and has a very square neckline that shows off a section of even the most balconettey bra; I resorted to wearing a bra that was exactly the same colour yesterday, and it looked RUBBISH.

I considered leggings briefly, concluded that at best would have to shave my legs more often, and at worst I would look like a tool, and bought straight leg jeans instead.

Boco · 09/04/2007 22:56

I do like some of the smocky things and the tunics over jeans - as long as they're not too balloony. But i'm slightly concerned about what's going to happen in the heat of summer as there's no way i'm wearing them without the jeans. There are alot of pictures around of the models wearing tiny tiny smock things and bare legs. I'm a slim size 10, but i aint getting my upper thighs out.

FrannyandZooey · 09/04/2007 22:57

They look quite good with shorts I think

pirategirl · 09/04/2007 22:59

ah yes that was the other thing, i looked at some of them and just knew, hey my boobs are no way gonna fit in that space!!!

I dont like the fasion at the moment either, have no boobs or figure so things just dont look nice on me

Gobbledigook · 09/04/2007 23:04

Me too - don't really like smocks, don't like leggings and in all the magazines there are lovely dresses but they are quite short. Short is in. I don't do short.

Gobbledigook · 09/04/2007 23:05

Boco - ditto! I'm not fat either but I ain't getting my knees out for noone!

misspastry · 09/04/2007 23:08

saw a pic of leggings in sunday times all baggy in the middle crotch area had some in 1984 ahhhhh getting to old but still sneak into topshop on occassin just dont make eyecontact with the other young n lovely shoppersm my comments from a 40 year old !!!

turquoise · 09/04/2007 23:09

God me too - it's all either skinny, smocky or frumpy. Hate all the 60's looking stuff, and all the shiny metallic stuff is beyond hideous.

NadineBaggott · 09/04/2007 23:11

I never have and never will be a slave to fashion.

I buy what suits (hopefully!)

What I find immensely irritating is once something IS in fashion you're stuffed if you don't like it because it's all you'll find in the shops

I remember a few years back when bias cut skirts were 'in' - supposed to be flattering to pear shapes - who came up with that one needs glasses, they ACCENTUATE pears, anyway it's all you could get, drove me nuts!

Gobbledigook · 09/04/2007 23:13

I like the metallics, I like wedges. Just the smock tops - some are OK but generally they are not flattering if you've got a curvy figure/small waist as they don't accentuate that at all.

turquoise · 09/04/2007 23:18

This jacket has to be one of the nastiest items I've ever seen.

I like this dress but have absolutely no occasion to wear it.

Gobbledigook · 09/04/2007 23:24

yikes!

TwirlyN · 09/04/2007 23:26

yep agree with jacket. Agree with dress, shame we are lacking with occasions though. So, What is good for spring for a real woman, any ideas? I spent 3 hours, walked miles, came back with shoes for DC. Starting to feel a bit deflated with spring so far.

turquoise · 09/04/2007 23:28

that is just about every single revolting trend in one!

Earthymama · 09/04/2007 23:28

I cried in Next on Friday, and I usually love clothes. To make up for it a Japanese woman in Covent Garden admired my DM shoes, so I felt better.
I have resolved to wear what I already have, but it so takes the gloss off special occasions when you can't find a thing you like.
