Clothes shops for a 41 year old

My friend recently told me I'm not too old to shop at Topshop & miss Selfridge and it got me thinking maybe I need to change my shopping routine and grow up a bit..

So where do you shop when you are the wrong side of 40?

I seem to have a lot of stuff from Next, the odd bit from Boden and some lovely trousers from Seasalt. I'm 58 and Wear what I like!

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 30/09/2017 15:34

Oasis and Warehouse are pretty good I find - albeit the skirts are a bit on the short side. I shop in charity shops a lot - especially the posher ones that sort by colour - because it gives me a really wide selection with no preconceptions.

I'm 46 and shop in White Company, Jigsaw, M&S, Mint Velvet, very occasional Joules, Next and Fatface, I also have bought loads from Hush the last couple of years.

Why say that you're too old for Topshop?

Why not just say that the things they have are not to your taste?

Unless they are to your taste, and you're arbitrarily stopping yourself from wearing things you like because you believe that the shop is too young for you?

Trills · 30/09/2017 16:23

I always find something that I like when I go into H&M.

I also always see a lot of things that I definitely don't like... but they don't stop me from finding the thing I like.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 30/09/2017 16:25

I'm 48 and most of my casual stuff (Leigh jeans and dresses) is from Top Shop. Work suits are Hobbs, going out dresses are French Connection. T shirts and vest type things are Next or M&S.

Acornantics · 30/09/2017 17:14

42 here, tall 12 and I wear lots from TKMaxx (Jaegar bretons, different brands of cashmere), M&S for basics, Zara and Mango, John Lewis own brands, Dorothy Perkins tall range for dresses and printed tops. Also love the non busy prints from White Stuff as the cut of dresses is nice and long.

Never shopped in Topshop as I have thighs!

Kenworthington · 30/09/2017 17:26

I'm 42 and shop at top shop, urban outfitters, H&M, but also m&s, vintage shops, online I like plumo and also little individual boutique type shops. I'm not keen on Zara because a it doesn't really seem to fit me and it always seems really crap quality in the shop, there's always stuff stained and ripped which puts me off. Shop where you like, mix it up if you want but don't stop shopping somewhere you love because someone told you you shouldn't

thedevilinablackdress · 30/09/2017 19:05

YY to shop wherever you damn well please. And slightly off-topic but can we all start saying that we're the right side of 40 Grin

jackny · 30/09/2017 19:09

46, have a lot of Next but really like Cath Kidston and Joules

Tameagobairanois · 30/09/2017 19:18

Different strokes etc!

I definitely still shop in Top Shop, H&M, Zara but at 48 am a lot more selective about what I buy in terms of quality and also style. I tried on a gorgeous (on the hanger) dress from H&M the other day and it fitted well but the quality was so cheap (think flimsy, with uneven seams, sticky zip etc) that I decided to save the money for something quality. I bought the Dale dress from Hobbs instead.

I also buy Hush, and the odd thing from All saints, J crew, Boden, Joules etc.

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 30/09/2017 20:39

All sorts of places for me OP - the usual Zara and HM but also COS ( HM's older sister) and Mint Velvet (cocoon tops are lovely this year) some basics from Next, Primark, River Island etc

But I like a lot of small new online designers - have been introduced to a Polish one - called RISK who make fabulous jersey wear.

Mandelinka · 30/09/2017 22:27

Turning 40 next week..,
Most of my clothes are from Uniqlo, Gap, H&M, Zara, TKmax
Love the look of COS, Oliver Bonas, and other stories, Jigsaw.

JoJoSM2 · 30/09/2017 22:43

I think it's more to do with picking things that are too tight, too short, too revealing etc. Topshop is trendy but it's possible to buy 'grown-up' item she there. Here's an example:

Floisme · 01/10/2017 00:06

61 and I shop anywhere from H&M to gentlemen's country clothing outfitters. About half of what I buy is second hand. If they have what I'm looking for and I can afford the price I'll buy it. What does it matter what the label says?

As it happens, I don't shop at Top Shop but that's because I don't want Philip Green getting another penny of my money.

Runningyogabooze · 01/10/2017 00:18

Uniqlo is good and cheap
