What does a 39 yr old wear "up town" these days?

I'm going a bit out out this weekend and I'm stuck. Have nothing to wear. Haven't even got a faithful fave pair of jeans anymore. Going to some bars and a club, but not a clubby club. What's in? What's edgy? I carry my weight on my massive arse and legs. I found a lovely tulip dress but it's so short you could see my bum!

Yes avoid any dress that shows your bum!

However if you have decent legs, short dress and black tights with heels.

Black leather pencil skirt (pleather is so good now too) with top tucked in and heels.

Or go simple. Well fitting skinny jeans and a nice simple top from mint velvet / whistles

Wear short and tight dress, or jeans with slightly transparent top, or short skirt, black tights and t-shirt. Wear what every shoes look ok and are comfortable, that could be boots, high heels, or flat shoes. But make sure your make-up is sharp and wear glitzy dangly earrings.

If it was me, I'd wear a short leather skirt, no tights, shoe boots, and t-shirt. But I'm not that cool. I'd probably wear trainers if I could get away with it.

Thank you! You all sound way classier than me. I cant remember the last time i wore a skirt! I more scared than ever now!

I would just wear a nice blazer/top
Pretty necklace and black skinnies or straight trousers (whatever suits)

Thanks. After having the dc I haven't really got back on the going out scene. Think I need a massive update!

Surely a tulip style dress would just emphasise the parts of you that you don't like? ie your bum and thighs.

Mushroomburger17 · 27/09/2017 19:29

No it skims and fits at the same time. Gives me an hourglass type shape.

OP forget the dress. If it actually shows your bum, or near enough, it's not a good look.

Rather than do everything different to normal, why don't you play it safe but incorporate one new thing in? Maybe a blazer instead of a coat? A skirt instead of jeans? Heel instead of flats?

Mushroomburger17 · 27/09/2017 19:37

Yes the dress has definitely gone back! You're right, I think I'll be too uncomfortable if I go for everything new this weekend but I'll start buying stuff for next time.

Watching with interest. I'm not sure a few of the suggestions would suit someone heavy of bum and legs like the OP and me

Justdontknow4321 · 27/09/2017 21:01

Do you have a small waist?

Coulette trousers or high waisted trousers look good on someone that's got a small waist but bigger bum and thighs.. which is my figure ..

Or a shirt dress?
