What color of bag to give to my MIL?

She lives in another country and I think she's more of a casual dresser but she had a very nice upbringing and was an executive previously.

Are these old-looking? Which colour?

She's 70 but doesn't look it.

Or not this bag?

I don't personally like it (yes - old looking) but we all have different taste so if you think your MIL would use that sort of bag then great. If I had to choose, I would choose the caramel.

My DM of a similar age likes cross body bags and doesn't like anything too heavy. If I were going to go for a shopper style bag, I think a more plain one looks nicer but as I said. . . .personal taste and all that!

CheckingMyPrivilege · 09/09/2017 09:09

Actually I don't like it too but I don't know what she likes. lol. Thought this one was a bit safe.

Haha, it's difficult isn't it?! I might be tempted to go for something more plain/stylish (you actually like) then. I think this one is really only safe if you know she'd like it or know she has no interest in fashion! Depends how much you like her, of course. . .

What about longchamp pliage nylon? uk.longchamp.com/pliage/product/9927

Loyly · 09/09/2017 10:09

I agree with King, if you aren't sure what she'd like a Longchamp Pliage is a good choice.

KingIrving · 09/09/2017 10:10

You know you can personalised them for not much more?

LadyLapsang · 09/09/2017 11:13

I would go for a cross body bag. Lugging around a lot of stuff in a large bag is not good for anyone and I doubt she needs such a large bag. What about something such as this - www.jcrew.com/uk/p/womens_category/handbags/crossbodybags/signet-bag-in-italian-leather/F5231?color_name=roasted-chestnut

King and Loyli

I'll look at Le Pliage! :)

I really don't know what she likes. She's retired, she wears shorts...I'm trying to remember what type of bag she uses but I keep getting blank lol

I think that one is much nicer/safer, OP. Unless she's always in shorts - then maybe she's want something in a lighter colour and less wintery?

Peppermeant · 09/09/2017 12:34

I'd avoid making any style choices for my MIl unless I was sure!! My MIL has a bad back/neck and wouldn't carry a tote (prefers a backpack) and would choose red every time (ie the complete opposite of me).

LadyLapsang · 09/09/2017 12:39

Especially as relatives get older - my parents have both died now, but my MIL is in her mid-80s - I think how many nice bags etc. am I going to be able to treat them to before they die. I don't mean to sound depressing, but I think it's a time to try and get them something they will really love. If you are not sure of her taste, could you treat her to a shopping trip with lunch or afternoon tea to choose something together?
