My 40th Birthday Sartorial Dilemma

Next Friday is my 40th birthday. My Fiancé has organised ‘something’. All he had told me is that we’ll have to get up pretty early, and that he’ll have to drive quite a long way.

This morning I pressed him for some hints on what type of clothing I might want to wear. He says that I should go for something casual and comfortable for walking in, but definitely not countryside rambling etc. I asked whether something along the lines of decent jeans, flat shoes, nice jacket (leather perhaps if not too warm) and nice bag etc (i.e what I would normally wear if we were say having a sightseeing and lunch day in a city) would be suitable and he says perfect.

He then went on to ‘casually’ say we might want to sling an overnight bag in the car in case he doesn’t feel like driving back, and that I should pack smart/casual for evening (i.e. I suggested and he confirmed heels, skinny black jeans, pretty blouse/top would be suitable) but if I wanted I could ‘chuck in’ a nice dress and heels too just in case.

So what I read from the info he’s given me is that he probably isn’t driving a long way and we’re possibly going on a train or flying somewhere, we ARE staying overnight and I should probably take a dress and heels. (He asked me last night whilst watching Masterchef which restaurants in Mayfair I thought were worth going to…….. although a red herring possibly).

So my problem is that I’ve never really nailed the wearing a dress for ameal out thing, I usually end up looking too formal, too Summer sun dressy, or like it’s Christmas lunch with my parents, and change back in to top, skinnies and high heels with clutch bag type of outfits.

I obviously still have time to source something for next Friday night, (just in case!) but no idea what to look for. I’m a petite size 6, don’t have loads to spend and usually shop in Warehouse, Oasis, New Look, Dorothy Perkins, or second hand stuff on ebay. Please help!

Personally I would take skinny dark jeans, a 'nice' top (a silky cami or something like that) and a pair of heels (probably something sparkly or strappy) That would work for a fancier restaurant but wouldn't look ridiculous in say a gastro-pub if it's the evening.

I'd be taking a little black dress (h&m and zara should have several cheapish options) to wear with black ankle boots. This is usually a safe bet!
