Can you recommend a brilliant hairdresser in London?

I just moved to London and I need to find a new hairdresser. I hate looking for a new hairdresser so I thought I'd ask here for a recommendation.

I am 40 and work in a job where I need to look smart but not frumpy. I want someone who will be able to cut my hair without wanting to make me look hip but who will still give me style.

Ideally I'd like to find someone in central London or West/ North West.

Any recommendations please?

Groovy Salon in Soho is very good (www.groovysalon.co.uk).

I have been going there one and off for about 3 years. Think you can book via Treatwell

Jones & Payne in Covent Garden. Love them, love them, love them.

Without a doubt Russell at Charles Worthington in Percy St. By far and away the best hairdresser I've had. He was recommended to me by a very glamorous friend after I had a hair disaster and he's amazing.

I'm currently seeing a senior colleague of his who has set up his own business in my town as I have a breastfed baby that is crawling but town is a full day away from me so a bit long to leave her just yet (can't be bothered with expressing). My hair isn't looking as good as when Russell does it and I'm looking forward to going back to him in a few months.

Taylor and Taylor at Liberty.
I love that place, and my hairdresser there is brilliant.

Edward James Aveda - I am the fussiest person ever but love what they do there - you even get a head/shoulder massage with essential oil at the start of your appointment to relax you!

Tim Furssedonn at Neighbourhood Salon in Earl's Court. neighbourhoodsalon.co.uk/team-member-page/
Fab session stylist who does hair at LFW but you don't pay the big salon prices.

Brilliant! Thanks everyone - going to look into all these recommendations now. For the people recommending Jones & Payne - any specific stylist there?

Jess at J&P is great for both cut and colour.

I second the recommendation for Mia at Windle and Moodie - she is fantastic. Really, really takes the time to understand what you want, and cuts, musses your hair, checks, cuts, checks, etc. - so when she's done the cut just really works with your hair and it sort of falls into place on its own. She isn't cheap (c. £100) but she is the best I've ever been to - and is also really nice.

I've also tried a range of stylists at the Oskar Pink salons in the Camden area and thought they were good, too - especially Elliot at the Mornington Crescent branch. He's more around the £50 mark.
