Gap - what the heck?

Has anyone looked at Gap recently? They have jacked up their prices hugely (cardigans now £75, jumpers £50) and stopped using such nice materials: everything is nylon and polyester. I used to go there for 100% cotton sweaters, instead, the place is filled with nasty floral dresses and nylon mix tops.

The jeans are still good but expensive....the shop looks like a jumble sale, with various offers, showing their price point is wrong.

I think it's dying a death - so sad. it used to be one of my 'go to' shops.

I'm a size 8/10 in most shops but I've had to order medium from Uniqlo as it's quite slim fitting. It's a Japanese company so the clothes come up small so I'd suggest that you size up.

I'm going for knitwear and am debating going for an x large to be on the safe side.

TumbleBee · 29/08/2017 07:51

I used to think Johnnie Boden was needy with his 'where are you? Why don't you shop with us? Here's 10% off? Do you love me now?' mailshots.

Then I met GAP. EVERY SINGLE MORNING begin with GAP offering me between 30-40% off full price stock. Every single garment is 'the trouser' or 'your new go-to unflattering dress'. Sometimes I look on the website and there's still nothing I fancy.

fairgame84 · 29/08/2017 07:59

I love Gap but only shop at the Outlet as it's my nearest gap store. The jeans in the Outlet are priced so well and fit lovely. I got 3 pairs for £60 earlier this month.
They do nice clothes for 12yo DS as well.
Some of the stuff is a bit frumpy but i can't fault the jeans.

Donostia · 29/08/2017 08:06

Haha this thread has just reminded me that when my little brother was about 5 in the early 90s he used to call breasts "G and P" because that's how they were labelled on my mum (who loved a gap hoody)

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2017 08:19

The stuff in the Outlet is always nicer than the stuff in store or on the website, but presumably must have started there?

PowerPantsRule · 29/08/2017 08:48

LOL Donostia

I am not even sure the stuff in the Outlet Shops started life in normal Gap shops! I think they might ship it straight there!

Says it all that this thread is about Gap and then we end up talking about how good Uniqlo is (except for the kids clothes which are bloody awful and Uniqlo dresses. Why can neither Gap nor Uniqlo do dresses? Actually, who can do dresses? Used to be Boden but theirs are just shapeless out of date shifts in the main now).

Such a shame! I used to love Gap. I remember when their sales were amazing, but now they are like a jumble sale of normal prices!

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 29/08/2017 10:10

I wish Uniqlo had a shop in Yorkshire or Manchester

They are opening a store in Oxford later this year so they are branching out further from London. I would have thought Manchester or Leeds would be logical for a northern branch.

PNGirl · 29/08/2017 10:16

I like their outlet jeans and t shirts but never buy anything in a full-price shop.

Numbsnet · 29/08/2017 10:30

My wardrobe was about 50% GAP until recently. I loved the shape of their jeans in particular and could trust buying online.
I've also changed to buying most of my basics in Uniqlo. Their tops are great.

My last GAP experience turned me off. I orders a denim camisole, a workout top and a pair of grey chinos.
The camisole was perfect and lovely material.
The workout top was missing
The chinos were enormous (about 4 inches too big) and torn on the wasit band with a big 6 inch rip across the waist. You couldn't miss it, looks like it was a sewing machine accident rather than a worn return.

The GAP customer service was excellent. They are in America I think and have good communication and quick to reimburse. But what the heck happened with the order? I didn't enjoy having to call and send stuff back so I'm not going on that website again.

Uniqlo is great but I wish they had a few more shops and a few more trouser/jean options.

JuicyCake · 29/08/2017 10:44

Always had nice GAP in my wardrobe, that was well made & lasted (regret Oxfam-ing my dungaree shorts...). But it's rubbish now.
Used to buy menswear & children's as gifts, but I don't fancy those much now.
Agree that they had great knickers! I miss them... Was flicking through an old mag recently & saw an ad for a stripy jumper they did about 15 years ago. I remember it being in the Regent St store, and me wanting it for Christmas!
Lots of GAP in TK Maxx at the minute & in my local charity shop which gets lots of brand new ex-department store stock (lucky me!). So, it might be going...
I do miss when all of the shops were good. Oasis, Warehouse, Monsoon. All of the big high street names. Wouldn't waste my money nowadays!

SwedishEdith · 29/08/2017 11:31

Uniqlo did used to have shops in Manchester. But they closed in 2004.

But, look, they're coming back Grin

Have to say, for as long as I've been on mn (decades) there have been threads about 'What is happening in Gap? It used to be so good'.

fivefour3twoone · 29/08/2017 20:38

Is uniqlo what gap used to be (not literally!) do we think?

MsUnderstanding · 29/08/2017 20:51

Gap closed thier only shop near me a couple of years ago. Quality is random so I won't buy online. Yes to Uniqlo for basics, also M&S for bi stretch trews and plain t shirts.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/09/2017 07:45

They have jeans for £70+ now.

What madness is that?

WTF?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 01/09/2017 07:59

I've just seen an add on FB and spotted a lovely white cotton top.

£69.99!!!!!!
What the actual Fuck are they on?! That is diubke the price it would have been earlier this year.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 01/09/2017 08:03

Has anyone been in the shop and looked at the stuff? Has the quality, cut etc, improved massively or are they taking the piss?!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/09/2017 08:10

I haven't noticed any significant improvement in the quality, my impression is of the opposite.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 01/09/2017 08:34

Those prices are properly mad. Impulse buyers will never pay that unless they're visiting from somewhere with a very strong currency indeed. And normal people with a special spam email account for GAP are probably not going to pay 48 quid for a pair of jeans. I guess I'd you really loved the top you might pay 42 quid???

SwedishEdith · 01/09/2017 10:37

But GAP is everywhere. You'd have no need to buy it in the UK if from elsewhere. Import costs must have rocketed (one or two ts?) for them. That top and those jeans! Shock.

Tbh, it's frightening. I buy a lot from there and Uniqlo - if prices rise everywhere like that, it's really quite worrying. Those prices are completely outside of my budget for everyday stuff.
