New friends asked us for supper, what to wear?

Lovely people, not posh or showy, but well off. We have known them a while as friends of friends, but not done a lot of socialising. Last time we met them at someone else's house (informal supper), I think she wore lightweight jeans and pretty top.

What would you wear to this sort of event? I feel a bit uncomfortable going out in jeans in the evening, would normally wear a pretty skirt and low key top, but I am ancient and out of touch!

Really? You don't know what to wear?

NotAnotheChinHair · 24/08/2017 17:31

No Heratnumber7, she doesn't, that's why she's asking in the Style and Beauty board.

Dressingdown1, skirt and top sounds absolutely fine if that's what you're comfortable in. Can you link to similar skirt/top so we can get an idea?

stayathomegardener · 24/08/2017 17:32

To be fair that's a tricky call if you don't know them too well yet.
Personally I would go skinny jeans wedge heels, pretty top and add a lovely piece of jewellery.
Safer than a too dressy dress.

Smart-ish trousers, nice top and discreet jewellery?

Dearlittleflo · 24/08/2017 17:42

It's tricky when you don't know them- I remember asking a (now vg) friend for supper and she turned up in a full-on cocktail dress while I was in jeans, so I had to pretend I hadn't got ready yet Grin

What you suggest sounds fab- either a skirt and simple top or jeans and a smart top, but not casual top and bottom or smart top and bottom. That way you'll fit in whatever.

Dressingdown1 · 24/08/2017 17:46

This is the sort of thing I normally wear www.johnlewis.com/jigsaw-thistle-print-skirt-midnight-green/p3304140

That looks lovely and a good choice- not too dressy, not too casual.

lazycrazyhazy · 24/08/2017 18:00

I would wear whatever makes you feel most confident. If you glow and look fab you've never got it wrong!

CaseStudyResearch · 24/08/2017 18:10

I'd be tempted to look at some wide legged trousers and a chunky cowl neck jumper.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/08/2017 18:19

It's too hot for jumpers!

I would err on the side of smarter top rather than bottoms as it's the top you see most of over the table.

CaseStudyResearch · 24/08/2017 18:23

Depends where you are Lady, I'm freezing right now!

LadyWithLapdog · 24/08/2017 18:24

Maybe age too. I'm definitely not cold Wink

CaseStudyResearch · 24/08/2017 18:27

Probably right Lady. 28 today, knew I was getting on a bit Grin

LadyWithLapdog · 24/08/2017 18:28

Haha, add another twenty. Then the rest...

LadyWithLapdog · 24/08/2017 18:28

Happy birthday!!! Have a lovely weekend.

Ttbb · 24/08/2017 18:33

I know what you mean about not wearing jeans in the evening. I would probably just wear what I usually do, casual dress or skirt and top. Linen or something.

Dressingdown1 · 24/08/2017 19:47

Thanks for your advice, everyone. It sounds as if either choice would be acceptable, so I'll probably wait until the day and see what the weather's like and how I feel.

Come back and tell us what you had for dinner. I'm nosey as I only have a few things I feel confident doing at guest level.

Daria32 · 24/08/2017 21:47

The skirt and too is lovely! Be prepared to take your shoes off though- it may make a difference to your outfit. we don't have carpet downstairs so it's okay, but we went for supper at a friends and took our shoes off as they had cream carpet- I wasn't impressed with dh's holey socks and I had black jeans and Christmas socks (it was last week!) oops!
