I am not usually a dress person but I have this and wore it loads this summer. It really suits me and I feel great in it, it's the first dress I've bought in years since I sloooooooowly dropped from a size 14 to a 10/12 and I LOVE IT.

I would love to be able to continue wearing it as the weather gets chillier into autumn and winter but I have zero skill with knowing what to wear with dresses. This one was easy in summer as I just wore it with metallic slip-on trainers or raffia-type wedges for evenings out.

I was wondering how it might work in autumn/winter with a slouchy fine-knit long-line boyfriend-type cardi - ideally almost as long as the dress itself - thick black (?) tights and black biker boots?

Does that sound awful or quite nice?

This is just for working from home and school runs, by the way. But I do (or did, pre-DD!) like to look as if I've made an effort. And I just love having a dress I like and that flatters me for a change, I'm a bit sick of my usual skinny jeans and Gap bi-stretches!!

Any other ideas...?

Thanks all.

Oh, and if it helps understand my usual style, I normally avoid Monsoon like the plague... haven't bought anything from there in about 20 years (am 40) but I spotted this dress in the window one day and diverted into the store later to buy it. Embroidered/ruffled stuff isn't me at all. Was quite amazed to find such a perfect dress in there!

Yes it sounds good.
You could also wear a long sleeved t underneath.

NC4now · 20/08/2017 19:41

Before I got to that part of your post, I thought: tights, slouchy cardi, biker boots. Possibly a scarf.

So it's a yes from me! I'm 40 too.

JessiCake · 20/08/2017 19:42

Oh yes, MasterNot, I like that idea too. Thank you. I have a very lightweight white one I haven't worn since I bought it las autumn as it's too flimsy on its own butu might well work layered under a dress.

Brilliant, thank you!

It is a really, really lovely dress. I think I'd wear with a scarf choker style and coordinated colour of tights that tones with the scarf, and ankle boots. but I'm fat and getting divorced so wait til someone trendy comes along.

missyB1 · 20/08/2017 19:42

I would wear it with either grey or black thick tights, and a grey or black cardigan but I would have a more fitted cardi rather than slouchy.
Boots could be either ankle or knee length.
It's a lovely dress, I love denim dresses!

JessiCake · 20/08/2017 19:44

NC4, thank you! Yep, will def scarf it up, scarves were always my 'thing' before DD so I have a treasure trove of lovely ones I haven't worn for 4 years! As a baby she used to grab them so I put them all away and then as a toddler I was too terrified of sticky fingers to get lovely wool/cashmere ones back out again!! She's starting school and (mostly) less sticky now so I am going to have a fab time digging my snuggly scarves out and wearing one EVERY SINGLE DAY FROM SEPTEMBER UNTIL APRIL... Grin

Grey tights!!! Genius!! See, this is why I posted on here. Thanks missy! I have some cable-knit grey ones I love but never know what to wear them with!!

I was thinking of buying an actual man's cardi actually, I'm tall and broad-shouldered so men's knits often fit me quite well... will have a look at uniqlo men's ones cos I'm a bit obsessed by Uniqlo in general.

Thanks ferriswheel, bet you're not fat Grin

Hugely apprecaited eveyrone thank you, I have the confidence to try this now!!

Oooooh, clogs... I can see how that would work but I fear I'm not devil-may-care enough for that look! Who knows, though, the sky may be my limit now...

ferris - gave up sugar - well, cut DOWN... by my standards it was 'giving up' but I do still have a little bit here and there and I still eat carbs etc. And walked. About 1 hour a day. And slightly smaller portions.

Took 5 months doing it that way. But no gym and no 'diet'. I had to re-think my (appalling) diet because I had a health problem and cutting down/out sugar was the best way to solve that. Side effect - muffin top and spare tyre disappeared! But I did eat a bit less and walk a bit more.

I've got a similar denim dress bit lighter denim, which I also wear in summer and winter. I wear with a long chunky cardigan, thick black wooly tights I got in white stuff, and brown ankle boots or I've got black calf length biker style boots.

I so need to lose weight. This year I've gone from a 12/14 to 14/16. Can't get motivated.

JessiCake · 20/08/2017 20:02

Oh God, officer, I've had one look at that site and I think I'm clogconverted... would you go for trad backless ones or ones with a back...?
(whispers) I love them all...

I have skinny skinny legs and scrawny ankles, though, will I look like I have bricks on my feet?

OP posts:
Judydreamsofhorses · 20/08/2017 20:04

I would wear it with a navy and white striped long sleeved top underneath, navy tights, and tan loafers. (I am not a cardigan person, though.) You could also layer a polo neck underneath.

JessiCake · 20/08/2017 20:07

Officer I'm sort of loving these Blush
What have you done??!

Oh judy I love the idea of stripy top underneath. I have about a million... good way to update them a bit. Thank you

Sorry to hijack thread but this might be a stupid question, but how do you wear a scarf? The only ones I've got are fleecy winter ones. I'd like to look elegant but am afraid I'd just look stupid. And which scarfs do you wear?

ilovechocolates · 20/08/2017 20:20

Love that dress btw

JessiCake · 20/08/2017 20:28

ilovechocolates - not a stupid question at all! I'm the one who started a thread asking how to wear a dress Grin

I have a LOT of scarves but rarely wear a traditional fleecy or knitted one. Most of mine are either massive square shapes or wide long oblongs if that makes sense - maybe 50cm wide and 150cm long?

Almost all of them are very very light/fine cashmere mix but they're NOT pashminas, not as solid a weave as that if that makes sense? Gazuy, maybe that's the word! But not silky...

I love print so a lot of mine are printed, I have two amazing leopard-print ones which are just amazing as the gauziness detracts a little bit from the leopardy-ness, if you know what I mean, so they're fairly understated. I wear them literally just draped round my neck a lot of the time - not even looped back up again just hanging evenly round my neck on either side - but I'm tall so I like that effect as it breaks up my upper body a bit. Safety-wise you have to be careful as they dangle more that way - I was always forever clutching the ends of my scarves as I went down escalators as they dangled down so far sometimes they were hard to keep track of!

I would def try a gauzy one in either a print or a nice colour and with as much cashmere in the mix as you can afford.

I used to wear cotton scarves a lot too as the weather gets warmer. Again, printed. Quite a lot of grey tones cos I'm obsessed with grey.

I do sometimes loop them back around my neck too, so that the ends still dangle down over my chest but less far down.

Will try to post pics of some later, I love my scarves, I do, and am so thrilled to be trying to get back into wearing them! I have a small fortune's worth of them sitting in my cupboard!

ilovechocolates · 20/08/2017 20:56

Haha yh forgot about that- I know how to wear a dress as I wear them all the time Grin

ilovechocolates · 20/08/2017 20:58

5ft long!! I'm only 5ft high so always worry about them being too long on me and looking silly.

Photos would be good tho pls n examples of scarfs- if u don't mind. I've got plain dresses and wondering how to liven them up so looking for ideas.

FlorenceLyons · 20/08/2017 21:40

I have a similar dress that I actually only wear in the winter, as it's a bit shorter than yours and my legs need tights under it! I wear it with a long sleeved top underneath (either stripy or cream lace - I have a thing about lace sleeves!), thick tights (black, brown or navy) and knee length boots. I like it with a leather biker-style jacket over it too.
