tried quite a few last year (dove, johnsons, nivea, garnier, loreal, no 7) which all ended in disaster. i exfoliated and used a mitt so nothing wrong with application.

this year i have discovered olay, piz buin and boots soltan do them too. has anyone tried either of these three?

did they make you go orange?
they do me. I've found I am better off jsut using normal st tropez tanning mousse.

nappyaddict · 28/03/2007 13:47

not orange, the colour was good. it's just they would wear off very patchily.

I've been using the Olay one. Nobody had commented that I looked any better than usual, and I couldn't see any difference, so I tried putting some on my belly to see whether it was actually working. By the third day I had a streak of colour on my belly - not a disastrous orange, but neither was it the colour that was appearing on my face (or rahter was not appearing on my face). I'm still using it, I live in hope .

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 14:13

im using the johnstons on body and olay one on face

i love the johnstons one, the olay one is very very pale

friendlyedjit · 28/03/2007 14:13

used that johnson's holiday sun cream and after several days looked tango'd. hadn't realised there were two different types for lighter and darker skin types and as am pale murphy's law of coiurse had picked the darker one!!!!!! seemed to take ages to fade..

Lucycat · 28/03/2007 14:15

The Olay one for the face, a moisturiser with self tan - can't rememeber what it's called is nice, it doesn't smell and as it's quite pale it means that I ahve some colour without doing a Christina.

bozza · 28/03/2007 14:19

I don't get this. I didn't think you were supposed to use a mitt to apply the moisturiser type ones. I thought you just put it on like body lotion. I am currently using a Boots one atm. I still seem pretty white though. I have been using it on my face and legs.

nailpolish · 28/03/2007 14:21

you just put them on like normal everyday body and face moisturisers

nappyaddict · 28/03/2007 14:23

i just exfoliated and used the mitt for extra precautions to be honest!!

well you might as well use a fake tan like st tropez then, once/twice a week

nappyaddict · 28/03/2007 14:32

me and real fake tan get on even worse than me and fake fake tan!

Is there one that smells less than the Johnsons one? It's the only one I tried last year, but it just streaked so I gave up.

This year, I am going to have a proper salon applied St Tropez and then top it up with the moisturising ones (I tried this method before Christmas and it worked).

None of them make me go orange, or even very dark, I just get streaks (but not when done properly in a salon).

Why don't you try the St Tropez one? It's really nice and there's a light or dark one. I've used it for five days now and I have a really nice glow. Tried Johnson's and didn't like it at all.

deaconblue · 29/03/2007 10:17

My mum bought me the garnier fructis one which apparently is really good and doesn't smell. I daren't try it coz they all leave me absolutely honking from every pore.

Spidermama · 29/03/2007 10:19

I use Aveda tinted moisturiser and it's an absolutel miracle I can tell you. However it costs about £7,689.99 a bottle so I can't use it every day.

nappyaddict · 29/03/2007 10:21

I totally understand nappyaddict - I am the same.
I've tried atleast 3 of them - and I hated them all -Johnsons, dove - can't remember the others - will have to go to the bathroom and re-investigate my sticky , dried up bottles and get back to you .

Please someone advise of us of a decent one !

nappyaddict · 29/03/2007 11:52

which others have you tried?

L'Oriel (sp?) do a spray one. I have a cupboard full of half used stuff which turns my skin orange and streaky inspite of the claims. Am really pale most of the time and they all look wrong.
Bought the new spray one yesterday (£8.99 so more expensive but I guess it will last longer as you only do a very light spray) tried it last night [rolls leg of jeans up to examine leg] and it is very subtle but natural looking and is supposed to build up over 7 days. Watch this space!

Sheila · 29/03/2007 13:12

Re the ghastly smell if you put it on last thing at night it doesn't whiff by the morning.

fishie · 29/03/2007 13:15

dp used my johnston's one on his face and his eyebrows and sideburns went orange. not attractive
