Birkenstock sizing

What is the sizing like? If I'm usually a fairly reliable size 5 in shoes/sandals/flip flops/trainers, which size in the Madrid one strap would you recommend ordering?

I normally wear size 37 but need a 35 in Birks. The pair I've got on now are 9 years old!

MaisyPops · 07/07/2017 23:37

Mine are 1 size down from my normal size.

I still haven't broken my 2 pairs in. I bought 2 a year or so back because friends swore they were comfy. I'm not convinced now.

auberginesrus · 07/07/2017 23:40

If you've got narrow feet they do narrow width on the Birkenstock website

auberginesrus · 07/07/2017 23:44

Thinking about it i think its because they are wide that i need a smaller size - I generally go down a half size in a marks and spencer wide fitting shoe too - must allow my feet to spread out to their natural shape!

mamalovesmojitos · 07/07/2017 23:55

True to size for me. Ivd had quite a few pairs....love them all!

nightswimming1 · 08/07/2017 00:23

I'm wide and buy their regular width in my usual size

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 08/07/2017 01:28

Was also going to say socks to break them in. Once they are broken in they really are so comfortable and I can walk miles in them.
My feet sit properly according to the sizing advice on the website and still need to size down.

mugc4ke · 08/07/2017 07:50

I never downsize and just go for my normal size. Cannot really relate to this 'go down a size' posts.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 08/07/2017 07:55

I don't size down, tried some on a size down from my normal size and feet were at the end of the sandal.

silkpyjamasallday · 08/07/2017 08:03

I'm a 5 usually but have quite wide feet, but a 4 in birkenstocks normal width is perfect. I have arizonas and they have survived 4 years including two summers of whole day walking tours with English language students in London. They are 100% worth the money imo, I got real suede ones and I think they were about £65

Howaboutthisone · 08/07/2017 08:29

Thanks for all these replies. That link to the sizing was interesting too. I think I need to try to find a tk maxx or find a discount code and get trying on- in my size and the one below just to check!

Birkenstocks all come in 'normal' which is wide, and 'narrow' which is perfect for me. In narrow the sizes are perfectly correct - I need my normal size. In 'normal' they are too large for me. However I wouldn't size down, ever - it makes the fitting just wrong.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 08/07/2017 19:08

I have narrow in my usual size that I got a couple of years ago (Arizonas), I've recently tried some on in Office and the same size are too big, so will need to size down if I buy another pair.

Dawndonnaagain · 08/07/2017 23:18

I have a pair of black gizah sandals that I live in. They're a seven, I'm usually an eight, and yes, they fit properly.

Howaboutthisone · 09/07/2017 20:31

I was in an outlet shopping centre earlier and found one lovely pair in a sole trader outlet. Only thing was that they were two sizes larger than my usual size so not quite what's been recommended on here!

Thanks so much for all of the replies!

Just wondering if anyone has tried the Madrid Eva? I have had the regular Madrids for years but the cork soles often get soggy round the pool in the summer, so I'm wondering about getting the Eva with rubber type soles instead, but not sure if they would be comfortable.
I definitely have to size down. I bought my usual size at first and had to give them away. One size down is perfect for me.

affectionincoldclimate · 14/07/2017 04:29

mozzrules
I do.
Hugely comfortable. The material is very soft and moulds to the foot. I am surprised actually that I now prefer the Eva birkies to the normal ones.

mozzrules · 17/07/2017 18:03

Thanks for that affection I ordered some from Amazon which arrived yesterday. It's early days but they are really comfortable and so light - not to mention half the price! I have a feeling I'm going to end up liking these better too!

Mrs9C · 17/07/2017 22:58

Schuh do their own version as well, think around the £25 mark. I sized down for my Madrids and they were a good fit.
