Mascaras that promise the earth but are crap...

I've used Lancome Hypnose for years but keep trying other brands due to the cost. Can't find anything that compares. I've got very short, stubby lashes and want length & volume.

1 Bobbi Brown smoky eye mascara. Sample arrived with an order. Rubbish. Doesn't add volume, adds a bit of length after 4 coats, but that's all.

2 Soap and Glory Thick and Fast- as above.

3 L'Oreal Lash Architect- Useless- no build up at all.

4 Maybelline Great Lash - spiky, hard lashes

5 Bourjois- can't recall which one but very wet mascara, oozing out of the tube, far too much on the brush to use without it glooping everywhere.

My favourite mascara is Collection basic black one. It's only two pounds, its waterproof, NON clumpy and fab 😊

PaperdollCartoon · 02/07/2017 09:26

I use Too Faced Better Than Sex waterproof now and it's brilliant. I get a lot of compliments. It's not a great amount cheaper than Lancôme though.

ThinkFastNotSlow · 02/07/2017 09:54

Benefit They're Real - gave me panda eyes and made my lashes really clumpy, not thick and luscious.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/07/2017 09:56

Benefit BadGal- dire.

I only ever use No7 waterproof which see me through hayfever, swimming and funerals. Never, ever run.

Pombliboo123 · 02/07/2017 10:00

I think every mascara since the beginning of time promises great things and never delivers.

My favourite is as somebody else said - Too Faced Better than Sex (but has to be the waterproof one, the none waterproof one is rubbish) but even that one isn't perfect... plus it's like £23 so not exactly cheap

troodiedoo · 02/07/2017 10:03

I'm the same OP have a make up bag full of regrets. Have to say great lash big is the best of the bunch for me. Do you curl first? Rapid lash serum is worth the money, although it'll be at least a month before you see results.

I think the tubing mascaras are the best, my favourite is dreamweave.

I've learned to my cost that if you find something you love it's not worth shopping around for a cheaper alternative. I did the same with foundation. You just end up wasting money trying to find a cheaper one and they're never as good. You could probably have bought a couple of lancome hypnose with the money you have used trying to find an alternative!

Haffiana · 02/07/2017 11:07

I bought the Hypnose Volume-a-Porter mascara recently to try, and I have to agree that I am very, very impressed with it. I am particularly crap at putting mascara on, and always end up with spikes which I detest. The wand on this one seems to stop that.

However if I want a mascara I don't have to worry about, I use a tubing mascara.

PolaDeVeboise · 02/07/2017 13:26

Max Factor Masterpiece Max, trust me.

PolaDeVeboise · 02/07/2017 13:26

Shit, didn't read title properly. The above is not crap, quite the opposite Blush

MyGastIsFlabbered · 02/07/2017 17:41

I'm constantly disappointed in mascaras so watching with interest.

MaQueen · 02/07/2017 17:53

Paper I recently treated DD1 to the Better Than Sex one by Too faced, and neither of us rate it at all. Clumpy and a bit gloopy, and it flaked quite badly.

In fact, after a few goes it's now languishing in the bottom of her make-up bag, never to see the light of day again, I expect...

I have tried all the high-end ones, and I always, always come back to Max Factor Masterpiece Intense.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/07/2017 18:00

I never got on with the lancome ones so I bought a £5 superdrug B waterproof.

Layers well, no clumps & smudge proof.

It's been discontinued 😂, as is the way with these things.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 02/07/2017 19:13

Now you see, I bought Hypnose after buying about a hundred others, and thought it was fairly meh.

Benefit They're Real was the worst though- like putting black gloss paint on my eyes. Might as well have wiped it straight onto my cheeks and cut out the 5 seconds it was on my lashes.

I'm sticking with cheapo ones from now on.

Gone back to good old 2000 calorie at the moment. It's not a holy grail, but it's better than the above 2.

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/07/2017 19:18

Mascara, like almost no other product, has to be right for the user. That's probably why there are so many of them.

What one person finds amazing, another will find totally shit.

I think the pink and green maybelline one is complete rubbish, but other thinks it's the holy grail.

If you want to experiment trying different brands etc, QVC is your friend with the 30 day try and return for full refund if you're not happy policy.

Babyblues14 · 02/07/2017 19:23

The best mascara I ever had was from Thailand. Lost mine while I was there so had to buy one, it was only cheap and was all in Thai but I'm gutted I didnt buy ten more!!!
Can't wait to go back to stock up. But I do quite like max factor ones

Branleuse · 02/07/2017 19:28

Benefit - theyre real. Gave me panda eyes after about half an hour. Crap

MaQueen · 02/07/2017 19:52

Sorry, it's the Max Factor Masterpiece Max that I always go back to.

34AQuid · 02/07/2017 19:58

I love the Loreal Telescopic in Carbon Black but its been discontinued. Limited stock on Amazon. I have long, very curved and very black lashes. I just want thickness and longevity from a mascara. Not a huge ask?!

Never got on with Maybelline. So dry and stubby.

Expensive brands - YSL, Chanel etc = not impressed.

Currently using Loreal Babybdoll which I think is a tube mascara (?) (no idea about these things)...its decent, but not amazing.

Mascara and foundation (for the over 40s) are my beauty quests....

Emerald123 · 03/07/2017 00:07

The Bare Minerals one in the chunky silver tube.£23 and was all over my cheekbones in minutes.Went in the bin.

PollyPerky · 03/07/2017 07:19

Thanks for the tip about QVC. I have tried the max factor ones and thought they were rubbish- which just shows how we are all different!

I try to buy Lancome when J Lewis do it as a special buy- 2 for £36 instead of £24 each, which is about twice a year, but this time (their sale) they aren't doing it.

I go through a tube once every 3 months or so.

I keep going back to YSL Babydoll. The mascara is great, never flakes and gives me look I want. I think it's the brush as well as the product.
I tried the YSL other "best-seller" mascara and didn't get on with it. Back to the babydoll.
I thought benefit was rubbish. Handed on to the teenager, the beneficiary of all my make-up bag errors.
