Any hairstyle/cut ideas for long thick hair on teenage girl?

Dd has lovely hair, but like mine it is v thick. It is all one length. She likes to keep it fairly long, like most of her friends. I never quite know what to advise her to ask the hairdresser to do, and it can quickly get a bit curtainy. (Think she prob quite likes to hide behind it sometimes 😀). She asks me to straighten it now and again. Wwyd if you were her?

Get it thinned out

Makes a huge difference

Learn some good french / dutch / fishtail plait type styles. They don't have to boring!

Oh and try Pinterest for bun ideas if she likes to wear it up.

Thanks - will ask for it to be thinned out more this time. Maybe long layers at the front?

I'm the same long thick hair I occasionally get it thinned and lots of long layers

Samoyedydog · 18/06/2017 15:29

I have long thick hair, when I had layers they were awful, made my hair really hard to manage and I've been trying to grow them out for about 10 years Angry

Beware of having it thinned, I had it done to my hair as a teen as it is very curly but actually not overly thick (the curls are deceptive) and the hairdresser and my my decided it should have less volume so thinning it out was the answer. I ended up with a limp ratty wispy frizzy mess for years! Pregnancy brought back its full lions mane volume and I will never have it thinned again! I do have a deep hatred of hairdressers though as I have never come out happy with what they've done.

silkpyjamasallday · 18/06/2017 15:47

*my mum that should say

emochild · 18/06/2017 16:07

silkpjs

Sounds like they thinned it by razoring it as the exact same thing happened to me -horrible frizzy, ratty mess

I now have it done with scissors and it makes a huge difference

Samoyedydog · 18/06/2017 16:37

Thinning was bad for mine too.

RubyGoat · 18/06/2017 17:16

I have short hair now, but it used to be extremely long & quite thick. I would never have had it thinned or layers put in - as it means you're quite restricted with up-styles. If its layered/ thinned, then plaits, buns etc are out as they quickly shred & go poufy (unless you spend a lot of time on them - the whole point of a bun is that it's quick). Personally I'd get her some decent conditioner, a good hair towel (FGS don't rub long hair dry), & look properly into really looking after long hair. If it gets straightened regularly it will quickly become damaged & the only remedy to that is scissors I'm afraid.

So, thin carefully if thin at all? And short if she wants of course, but I don't think she will yet. And maybe get some care advice from the hairdresser. Thanks

I wouldn't ask anyone to 'thin out' lovely long thick hair! Shock. Nooooo!

A few shaping layers at the front, maybe? A long side fringe?

If its straight, be VERY wary of layering it all over as what looks cool and choppy after a salon blow-dry often looks shaggy and straggly in the real world.

LemonSalad · 19/06/2017 11:51

Maybe a blunt fringe if she wants a change? Works equally well with gentle waves, poker straight hair or a tousled rock chick look and it looks like a proper style rather than just a curtain of long hair. Apart from the regular trims (can be done at home) I personally also find it really low maintenance and easy to style.

A blunt cut bob would look great. I have thick hair and have it short. My hairdresser cuts it with a razor so when she takes the weight out of it I don't get short bits sticking up. Do not let anyone wielding thinning scissors near her hair.
