I don't mind that and I suspect he will change his mind when the weather is warmer but it is conspicuously tufty around the edges atm. Will it grow past this stage quickly?

IME let it flow. It'll be so worth it. Great times are just around the corner if you can bite the bullet and let the tufts grow to take their own weight.

Really? He does look quite bizarre. I'm sure people are thinking things...

My boys have long hair which their father keeps cutting. I like the fluffy look.

Spidermama · 19/03/2007 22:35

Let them.
My MIL thinks things about my kids but again, I live in Brighton, so luckily there are many, many more foolish hairdos than those sported by my offspring.

I can't really speak for ruralsetshire though, obviously. However if he's got the gumption, who are you to prevent him fulfilling his full potential?

Is he copying someone do you know?

I'm biased as I love long hair on boys and I really fancied DH when he was long haired because he was doing Shakespeare.

I think his decision is slightly influenced by the fact that he hates being sprayed with water (a la barber). I can't think of any particular long-haired role models.... anyway, his heart is set on it and far be it from me to argue.

like spidermama I love long hair on boys. My ds 7yrs has been growing his hair so it touches his collar now - he (and me) think it is cooltastic!

Fubsy · 19/03/2007 22:54

Plenty of long haired surfer boys in the SW - all ages. Let it grow - easier to cut off if he changes his mind than to grow if he wanted it shaved off!

Ds1 has really thick long hair and masses of it, down to his shoulders now. He looks lovely. Nearly everyone comments on it, quite a few (young and old) saying he looks like a girl but he doesn't seem phased by it at all. He has a thing about being himself and really likes being different from all the other boys at school. The only time he gets fed up with it is at swimming because when he comes up from underwater he can't see anything because it covers his goggles.

In answer to your question, I think his took about three months to go from being short-ish to definitely being classed as long.
