What shorts am I supposed to wear?

All mine are suitable for the 20 something me so I've chucked them. I'm 36, have a serious job, not great legs, scarring on knees and hate shaving my very white legs. I'm on maternity leave so I don't have to be professional looking, but would be mortified if I bumped into someone from work with my bum hanging out.

What shorts do grown ups wear? I have a fine collection of both smart and casual shorts for a 3 year old boy

I've got a pair of bermudas and a pair of boy shorts from Sainsburys.

Linen skirts - something like this www.marksandspencer.com/midi-skirt/p/p22494131?image=SD_01_T57_8800_NT_X_EC_90&color=TEAL&prevPage=plp

I love linen when I put it on but feel really crumpled by the time I've got out of the car. I do like that those skirts have pockets.

I'm not sure I really know what Bermuda shorts are. I used to wear what we called Bermuda shorts in about 1989 but what I really remember is the awful neon prints.

Boyfriend / girlfriend cut denim shorts (more than a 3" inseam - I try for 5". Gap/Old Navy a good shout for these).

Chino shorts - I wear a lot of J Crew shorts, they have them in different lengths and oodles of different colours.

36 is no age, I still happily wear my shorts at 42 Smile

I don't have particularly big legs but I still want decent coverage. They are alarmingly white with just a bit too much cellulite at the top for me to feel comfortable baring too much.

I just got these from Next, they are a really good length on me. Because they are linen blend they are more forgiving crumple wise. You can roll them up if you want to.

I also got some loose denim look ones from Tesco which are good and don't feel like a complete arse in them.

I'm not in London so j crew is tricky but I'll have a look online at their styles. I like the sound of chinos.

I can see how those next ones might work. Might a print hide the creases a bit?

I'm 46 and I wear these Next chino shorts. These look great on and really quite smart. They come up big though so you might need to size down.

I've, also, got those linen ones Megan linked to, in the white print and the spotty ones and denim boyfriend shorts.

Bermuda shorts are knee length smart shorts - like chino shorts, but knee length.

The long print shorts of the 1980s are Hawaiian shorts.

eurochick · 05/06/2017 08:49

I have chino type shorts from oasis, which I like.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 06/06/2017 14:52

Bermuda it is then. I like chino style but would feel more confident if they're closer to knee length, at least while my legs are so white.
