Where/how to cut knee holes in my jeans

I have a pair of jeans that I want to give the ripped knee effect to. Should I just cut them with scissors straight across? Should it be on or under the knee? How do I make them look ripped?

I did my dd jeans, 1 poked hole with scissors then ripped, also used cheese grater, the smallest wholes for the faded area

I also assisted DD with this. Fold jeans as if going to iron a crease. Cut directly across the knee with sharp scissors (it helped they were a bit worn there). The through the washing machine to get frayed edges.

Great tips thanks, especially folding them first, wouldn't have thought of that!
