Where/how to cut knee holes in my jeans

I have a pair of jeans that I want to give the ripped knee effect to. Should I just cut them with scissors straight across? Should it be on or under the knee? How do I make them look ripped?

Apparently a bread knife works well.

I remember in the 90's using sandpaper - looks naturally worn rather than the straight cuts with a knife HTH
