Where are your sunglasses from?

Looking for inspiration. Usually spend £££ and am trying to be a bit savvy this time.

Went to TK Maxx at the weekend and saw a couple of pairs I liked but everything was so grubby and chucked about, I couldn't bring myself to buy them. They all looked second hand.

Am I missing a trick somewhere?

Coincidentally I was in Boots Opticians having my annual check up this morning. I needed a new pair of prescription sunglasses, so had a good look through the Boots own brand right up to the Ray-Bans and ended up buying a different colourway to add to the various pairs of prescription Wayfarers I already own. The reason was that the arms on the own brand looked cheap and spindly and my lenses are so complex that they're heavy and expensive. Plus I'm a Ray-Ban nerd.

smoothieooo · 23/05/2017 12:56

Mine are from TKMaxx. I know what you mean about the grubbiness though - I went in towards the end of the day and all the glasses which had come off the display were scooped up and chucked into a trolley - and there were some expensive glasses there. But I was lucky - found a gorgeous pair of Moschino glasses which were pretty reasonable (£30) and in perfect condition!

silkpyjamasallday · 23/05/2017 13:01

I have a pair from Linda Farrow which have been going strong for about 4 years and even survived DPs 6'7" friend sitting on them. Spending £££ isn't a waste if you don't constantly needlessly replace them every year when they are still in good condition. Styles don't change that much so a classic pair should last ages before they look out of date

Mominatrix · 23/05/2017 13:05

I lose at least one pair a year and have a round face which makes finding a shape which works a bit tricky. Thus, I buy glasses more frequently than average.

Prada and Chanel always have a shape that works for me. I also have a pair by Dita which I love (very cool, not as ubiquitous a brand, and hand made) and a pair of Bulgar I keep in the car.

Maudlinmaud · 23/05/2017 13:25

Do you know what bugs me about tk maxx, people steal the cases and you can never get the case which goes with the pair you choose. (The cases are free so not sure if it's actually stealing)

CointreauVersial · 23/05/2017 13:29

Boots. Decent quality and not stupidly expensive.

I usually spend my accumulated Advantage points on a new pair each summer; they usually send out a half price voucher in the spring.

sweetheart · 23/05/2017 13:30

I just brought a pair from ted baker. I have previously spent several hundred on pairs and these are a very good close comparison and they only cost £70

iseenodust · 23/05/2017 13:36

Bought some Nautica polarised ones in TKMaxx just last week but went mid-week so was a tidy display & quiet. Missed a trick though as didn't realise there were cases to be had too.

Maudlinmaud · 23/05/2017 13:49

Yes you just lift the case from under/beside the stand when you choose a pair iseenodust I only got a Ralph Lauren case as there was no oscars. What are polarised specs please?

hiimmumma · 23/05/2017 14:46

But you already have at least 5 pairs of designer sunglasses. Can you not wear them?
I'm just jealous because I wish I had 5 pairs of designer sunglasses!
Unless you've lost them like I probably would have by now.

Mine are Oliver Bonas and have lasted a couple of years but have to keep tightening the hinge screws as they do get loose!
Also have a £10 pair from Joy that live in the bottom of the push chair so are fairly bartered but do the job on those infrequent sunny days.

Dulcimena · 23/05/2017 15:07

I have Valentino, Jil Sander and Marc Jacobs ones from TK Maxx, agree with PP about buying from the website for a cleaner and wider selection, complete with boxes, cases etc. When I bought them, the Valentino and JS pairs were also on sale at TheOutnet but at more than twice the price Grin
My RayBans are from ShadeStation.

putdownyourphone · 23/05/2017 15:09

Ray ban, miu miu and Stella Mc (those are from Tk max).maybe find a style you like then buy them from tk maxx online so you know loads of people haven't been trying them on

putdownyourphone · 23/05/2017 15:09

Sorry hadn't rtft, seen that's already suggested

SunEgg · 23/05/2017 15:13

I picked mine up for about a tenner from Debenhams. They are great.

Westray · 23/05/2017 15:15

Poundland.

I don't wear sunglasses often and I am careless with them.

I pick up half a dozen pairs at a time.

Lolly49 · 23/05/2017 15:16

Ray bans from opticians as I am blind as a bat.

iseenodust · 23/05/2017 15:40

Maudlin I bought polarised because I drive a lot & found I was getting headaches with my old sunglasses. Too early to say if will help.

For the scientific explanation polarise explained.

Gowgirl · 23/05/2017 15:48

Chanel, they are bright red, ostentatious and i love them.......they live in their case on on my face!

Before that I bought cheapies all broke or lost regularly even when out and had too much to drink my chanels have always come home as I haven't seen another red pair in the shops.

rightknockered · 23/05/2017 15:54

I wear Rayban oversized aviators, always comfortable and like the style.
Tried cheaper ones, just can't get on with them.

LeggyMeggy · 23/05/2017 17:39

Thanks everyone, some great suggestions. I think I've realised I won't be happy with cheaper ones as they just don't feel right. I've really tried.

Made the mistake of popping into HoF today. Bad idea! Now trying the find preferred ones cheaper online. Found some lovely Ralph Lauren ones and D&G.

Anyone tried the Ray Ban Erika style? Can't decide if I find the plastic and metal combination a bit weird or not. Or whether I just like them because I've found them cheaper online!

Hiimmumma, I'm not being frivolous, all previous pairs have been well worn but eventually too scratched to wear.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Dulcimena · 23/05/2017 17:42

I really like the Erikas, they look great and are lovely and light. I'll be buying some myself soon.

sodabreadjam · 23/05/2017 17:50

I usually have prescription sunglasses but they were about five years old and the my prescription didn't suit any more. My eyesight has improved which apparently sometimes happens as you get older.

No time to get new prescription glasses before a holiday so I first of all tried TK Maxx - no luck as they all slid down my nose.

Found some in Matalan for £4 - perfect fit. Wore them in Majorca and they were great.

Don't know if I will bother with prescription sunglasses again.

Maudlinmaud · 23/05/2017 17:54

Thanks for the link iseenodust might get myself a pair as I'm a migraine sufferer.

sausagepastapot · 23/05/2017 17:56

Quay Australia from ASOS. Retro highly mirrored cat eye ones.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 23/05/2017 17:56

I have a trusty pair of polarised oakleys but I also have a funky pair for this summer from Quay Australia
