Growing out short hair

WandaOver · 02/05/2017 17:49

I have always had short hair. Had my long hair cropped when I was 19 and 40 years later it was still short and spiky.
I always thought it suited me short but having some scalp problems and decided to try and grow it into a short bob.
Six months in and it's driving me nuts. There is no question I I need a fringe, but how to find it? All I want is to scrape it up into a ponytail but it's not long enough. I'm wearing stretchy hairbands at home.
I'm going to have to cut it off again aren't I?

If you really want it longer, you have to power through...I've done this over past year and am so glad I can now wear up, down, do more things with it. I love short cropped hair but it just doesn't suit me - now it's swishy just past shoulder length and I'm so glad I didn't chop it again but between months 3 and 8 I could have happily chopped it myself with a bread knife.

Iamtheresurrection · 02/05/2017 21:44

How long is it? I'm growing my pixie out and it's finally long enough for a very short bob. I've kept my undercut so I can tuck it behind my ears for a change.

oldwife · 02/05/2017 22:10

I'm growing out a super short crop too.
It's now a very, very short bob. Can just about tuck behind my ears, but it is a bit of a state unstyled.

Have no major events coming up so am just going to let it grow...

I started growing my crop out last year. Then had a job interview. My hair was kind of just blah, so i got it cut off again. I have started growing it again. And its not at tge short bob stage.

So tempting to have it cut off again by i am staying strong. You just need to power through. It can be so annoying though.

It took me a year to grow from crop to chin length bob so persevere, you're at the worst stage!

I found the key was to have it trimmed occasionally so it still held its shape.

-keep the back short so you don't end up with a mullet

-add a side fringe

-tuck sides behind ears

Once hair is past your ears you're on the home straight!

WandaOver · 03/05/2017 09:16

It's not just me then!
LedaP What do you do with the bits that fall in your eyes?

The back is fine, about collar length and almost level.
The sides are just about tuck behind the ears length, but there is still a layer that's not quite long enough. I dithered over fringe / no fringe thinking it would make sense to grow it out. Then I decided I definitely look better with a fringe so change my mind.

What is a side fringe retainertrainer?

It's painful isn't it. I'm growing out a pixie cut and have almost had it all chopped off again a few times. I find clipping a few bit back helps to make it look better. It's now at the bottom of my ears all over and I can see the end is in sight.
I did get it trimmed so it grew at about the same level

Iamtheresurrection · 03/05/2017 10:11

I second the regular trims - a good hairdresser will be able to get it to look semi decent.

I have blending Kirby grips that i use to pin up annoying bits of fringe.

This is why people should not get the dreaded "pixie cut". Most people do not resemble a cute pixie when they have it. Even this actress lost something when she had a short cut.

I liked my crop. It took 5 minutes to wash and dry. Now it's a half hour job. I'm not used to faffing, I never wear make up.
I need to buy some hair grips.....

If you loved your no-fuss crop, what made you suddenly change? I'd have very short hair on and off for most of my life. I decided to grow it and got it to below shoulder length then 😡 was told by a number of people that "you really suited your short hair" so, had the lot off. Two days later I hated it and have grown now, since last March (just "absolute MUST" trims). Again, it's sitting in my shoulders and I just like having it "move". I don't even do much with it but, crops look amazing in young faces and those with great bone structure....on many people not so blessed, they can take on a middle aged "I've no idea what to do with it so I keep it short" look.

Keep at it, OP. The bob stage is THE WORST. But you have to go through it to get beyond...

oldwife · 03/05/2017 13:53

user That is a little unfair. Of course we all don't have perfect, well-proportioned faces to suit a pixie cut - but some prefer to have the no fuss, well groomed look that it achieves. I include myself in that category.

This thread is about the hassle of the growing it out stage.

I think Ksley Cuoco looks great with shirt hair Confused

slinkysaluki · 03/05/2017 14:11

Kaley

slinkysaluki · 03/05/2017 14:12

Oh dear .... short Blush

carrie74 · 03/05/2017 14:16

I've been growing my crop for just over a year and with very regular trims (every 8 weeks), it's been completely pain free. My hairs just past my chin, and I think looks a style you'd actually choose. I adore my hairdresser, plus she grew hers out a few years ago, so understands the pain.

I've not decided whether to go back to short (it definitely feels more 'me' short, but I'm not disliking it longer), but it's not off the table.

WandaOver · 03/05/2017 14:58

When I first had short hair it was in the 1970s when everyone had long curly perms and I had it cut like Annie Lennox. I am very old
I may be old and wrinkly now but I still have good cheek bones.Grin
One reason for the change was simply that I had a sore scalp and daily hair washing was making it worse. My friends, all of whom have long hair so may be biased, have said they like my hair longer.
So I want to persevere. I will make a start by getting it cut at the back.

I loved my crop. I am just bored and want to do something different.

I kept the front bits out of my eyes with grips and hairbands. Its now a bob with a side parting.

stream26 · 03/05/2017 21:52

You could try playing with it. Try and find cool new ways to do your hair..?
Or you could focus on the health aspect of it. Do deep conditionings etc
Or look at cool pictures of what you want your hair to neway look like to keep motivation going (what I do for fitness lol works great!)
