Help - instant cheap wardrobe update needed please!

Hi style gurus can you help please??! We have some lovely but very trendy friends coming down from Laaarnden for a weekend in the country (i.e to stay with us) next weekend and I so don't want to feel a complete country bumpkin. The female of the two is beautiful and always trendily dressed. At the moment I feel fat, frumpy, and basically as if I am turning into my mother. Am also skint.

Any ideas for some nice, cheap but not too crap in terms of quality, wardrobe updates that will also stand me in good stead for the spring?

Think stay at home mum, 5 ft 4in, curvy all over but especially large of nork, short waisted, brown hair cut in a fairly trendy short choppy style, fair skin, blue eyes. I always put make up on and feel like my hair and face look okay but my wardrobe is letting me down. I think I can take quite bright colours but I always seem to end up in black because it goes with everything, then I just look pale and washed out.

I was thinking nice new pair of boots or shoes with a bit of a heel, some nice smart trousers or jeans (but not black bootleg as I always do those....), maybe a tunic or long sleeved top? I'd like the sort of outfit you might wear to go to a nice country pub for lunch, or to do a bit of shopping in, farmers market type stuff. I don't want to look overdressed.

I have looked at the M&S website but oh it is do dreary.

Any ideas oh lovely ones??

PS Can't do short skirts because of varicose veins.

kneehigh boots, opaque tights (good for veins) and kneelength skirt?

I would say new jeans and a couple of jersey layered tops? Not those swirly tunicy things as they are just everywhere, but something a bit more subtle.

Lovely striking necklace or scarf always makes you feel good IMO
