What do you wear over a dress to a wedding?

I haven't been to a proper church wedding before. DH will be in a suit, DS1+2 wearing shirts and chinos and DD a dress. I'll be in a dress, probably a patterned 50s style/swing knee length dress. Or a maxi dress.
I'm stuck with what to wear over the top? It will be September and it's wedding followed by food and dancing (ceilidh).
Also, the boys will need something over their shirts. I'm thinking a hoodie won't cut it... DD will be fine with a cardigan but I won't. A blazer?! Never owned one... I'm clueless!

I usually go for either a blazer or if you can't find one in the right colour/fit then I sometimes wear a pashmina/throw wrapped around the shoulders x

I haven't decided on a dress yet, so outerwear options may impact on the decision. I have a strange urge to wear a fascinator, mostly because I like the word...

A little cashmere cardigan would be chic and you would get wear out of it.

But blazer is good too. New Look and Primark always have lots of colours.

Blazers then. OK... I'll have a look.
What about for my sons. I have ordered dark blue shirts and light chinos for them, totally forgetting they need something over the top. Should I just have got them suits or is that OTT?

My ds (6yrs) wears dark trousers, smart shirt and a waistcoat to weddings & formal occasions.

DD has a faux fur bolero type thing and I have a few pashmina shawls and bolero cardigans as cover ups.

Smart dark colour cardigans for the boys - my son has a lot of them from Next and Zara (hand me downs!).
For you probably a blazer but it will depend on the dress.

It's September or so unlikely to be freezing, I would buy the boys v-neck navy jumpers, perhaps waistcoat or blazer if they would be in the wedding photos.

Have just bought this dress (with Fascinator!) So would a blazer or bolero be best and what colour?

Not too white at all. I would probably go with a navy shrug or bolero.

Def not too white. Quite wedding-y, but not at all bridal. Or bridesmaidy.

I'd put a nice, soft pashmina style wrap with that. Maybe in the hot pink colour? You can get use out of it afterwards too - wear it as a scarf.

Thanks Alabasterangel I wouldn't have thought of pink, but thought blue would be tricky to either match or not look too matched...
I'm now looking at suits for the DSs as I've realised how cute they will look in waistcoats and I only have a year or two left to get away with dressing them! I realised that I can just buy second hand ones on eBay and then resell them...

Oh no, I now have to find shoes for my massively oversized feet. They can't be pointy heeled because of the flooring (it mentions this on the invitation). Or high, because I'm tall - and have to dance in them! White shoes? Blue shoes? Pink is a step too far...

I'd probably go with a black or pink bolero but tbh for weddings I usually end up with nothing and just being cold til I get inside! After stripping a couple of willows you'll have worked up a sweat Wink

I assumed some coverup for the church would be expected? Definitely will be too hot to wear layers when dancing. I do like to throw myself about. (Flats it is then!)

This was on a thread this week OP. Yes it is polite to cover up in church. Traditionally shoulders should be covered. Generally the higher the church the more so. In a Roman Catholic Church in Italy there was no admittance to the wedding without shoulders covered. Lovely dress!

Just picked up a gorgeous navy blazer with ribbon tie fastening that I am hoping will look good with it. Worried about mixing blues though. But I will be more comfortable in navy than pink.

Navy will be lovely wth that. About 80% of my wedding wardrobe (and I go to a LOT of weddings) is navy and it's very versatile. I have a very useful off-white blazer that I got in H&M - fitted and very slightly cropped, with a notch-neck collar.

You need some nice jewellery to go with your outfit OP. Something fairly delicate would look good.

When I go to weddings I usually have a dressy pair of shoes, then a pair easy on the feet, usually ballet flats.. I had some cream lace ones last time

Jewellery wise, I have a delicate Clogau heart shaped tree of life themed necklace that matches my wedding ring. It is my go to necklace and I will probably wear that. It's silver with a little rose gold. Have a silver bracelet too so will wear that. I don't really do jewellery often!
Shoes wise, I absolutely hate ballet flats so probably flat/small heeled sandals. White of silver maybe?
