How to look expensive in 2017

Inspired by How to look expensive 1 & 2 (loved those threads)

The clothes on sale this year are terrible beyond belief and really poor quality.
What are your tips for not looking like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards? Especially if you don't have enough money to buy from the more expensive shops?

This year I'm saving any spare money for the hairdresser and possibly shoes.

What makes you look cheap and what makes you look expensive (polished)

I tried on those Ralph Lauren t-shirts linked to above yesterday but I though the cut of the neckline was odd. It's quite square, which doesn't suit me. The white and cream versions were also transparent, which I wasn't impressed by. Was disappointed as they looked perfect!

I hear that Girl Meets Dress has terrible reviews and lets customers down at the last minute. So I'm suprised that you are so impressed by them that you jonined Mumsnet just to tell us about all them on every single one of your posts .

Been cheering myself up with a little retail therapy

This pair of cropped trousers from uniqlo in grey - goes a treat with my brogues or stan Smiths / gazelles

Plus a loose fit navy shirt for a bargainous £7.90

And these super comfortable Boden flats in black (courtesy 25% off discount code)

Those flats are very nice bananafish because they are structured and have a tiny heel. Fatfeet here can't wear pointed shoes otherwise I'd have been tempted to.

No exciting retail therapy here. I've been buying a few staples in classic colours for my colourings. It's brought my wardrobetogether well though.

I've also begun the long process of losing a lot of necessary weight so clothes that fit now shouldn't in a few seasons time. Notthatitespeciallystopsme

Although I love and need high heels as I'm a short arse, I've purchased a few pairs about five of flatter shoes for walking to work, to clients offices etc and keep heels in my satchel. Wore a pair the whole day the other day and no-one noticed I was significantly shorter so may continue this. Shoes on the way include these

Hope they don't look too chunky otherwise they'll be going back but not sure why I didn't do this years ago.

If it's any consolation ClearWinter, I have skinny feet and can't wear pointed shoes either Grin

jewelwinter · 30/04/2017 12:04

Thank you C0RAL. That does make me feel better Grin

Am a bit late to the party, but I've loved reading this thread. Am returning to work in the summer and really need to get a smart, but stylish look together 😦.
Haven't shopped in Uniqlo for a while as not near any shops, but their workwear looks great.
For me, it's not really about looking expensive, but more about looking well put together, appropriate and comfortable. I did a big edit of clothes and got rid of most things with patterns or anything fussy, most things made out of man made fibres and a lot of cardigans. I used to wear loads of cardigans but I suddenly felt like they made me look frumpy, so I'm sticking to sweaters at the moment.

Get your eyebrows done they said, you will look polished they said. Well, if looking like a cross between a Gallagher brother and Frieda Kahlo is polished, then I have hit the jackpot. I have two fucking slugs over my eyes that just make me look cross!!

Uniqlo's online service is excellent.
