Best shoes/sandals for walking a lot in NYC

I have wide feet that swell attractively in hot weather and on planes so by the time we get to our first stop in our US adventure this year they will be very puffy. Which trainers/sandals would be best to be comfy but also allow them to breathe and spread out for doing lots of walking in NYC?
I'm considering birkenstocks (so would buy now and break them in) or Skechers maybe which I find very comfy. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I wore Sketchers Go Walks in Florida last year and they are so comfortable. If you are going in summer I would wear sandals that are designed for proper walking. I don't "get" the MN love for Birkenstocks IMO they are hideous and look uncomfortable and are expensive.

Well, lots of people love Birkenstocks! I do and find them extremely comfortable.

Might have to go for the fugly mountain sandals for my fugly fat trotters then. Cheers for the suggestions.

I find those Merrell type sandals actually MAKE my feet swell. I'd just wear properly fitted trainers or walking shoes.

Or avoid NYC in the summer. It does swelter.

I live in NYC and I'm going to strongly suggest actual shoes. The streets are REVOLTING and covered in mysterious smelly water and rubbish and I prefer to have my feet covered up. I walk miles every day and usually wear a pair of velcro Supergas because you can adjust them on the fly if your feet swell up! They're also a light canvas so your feet can breathe.

I spent last summer in NYC and Washington DC. It was baking hot and we walked miles. I wore FitFlops. They were brilliant. And having thick soles, if there is muck on the pavements, you are a bit protected (though have to say I never found a problem with dirt!)

I wore Birkenstocks all last summer in NYC and they were great, very comfy, and the sole is thick enough to keep your feet off the gross pavements. Also they look stylish and are worn by actual New Yorkers so you won't look like a tourist!

They look nice on too. Inner isn't all leather apparently tho, so insole might be needed. Dead comfy.

Ecco. But you should still change to a different pair of shoes after a few days so they stay comfortable.
