Advice please ! What would happen if I didn't get my hair cut for a longish time?

I am trying to grow my hair and am wondering how long I can get away without having it cut?

I know everyone says you need regular trims, but do I really? I kind of resent paying lots of money fir a little trim and also when I ask them not to take my hair too short it usually ends up too short. As my hair is curly I think they underestimate how much they are taking off.

If I left my hair for say 6 months or longer what terrible thing might befall my cheveux please?

I am also growing my hair, and am resisting having a trim more than every couple of months. My hairdresser is very good though and knows exactly how much to take off just to keep it looking tidy without compromising the length too much.

He said to me that you only really need it trimmed if it is looking dry/straggly. Don't feel you have to go on a regular basis as it does end up losing £££.

No terrible thing. It'll be fine. I did be same when I was growing mine out. Of course, it depends on your hair, and to what extent you think you can get away with it looking a bit unruly. But there's no law that says you need trims.

It might end up looking a bit Raggy at the ends, but that's about it.

For what it's worth, are you telling your hairdresser how much to take off? How is the cutting the hair? With naturally very curly hair technique does need to be different; are they experienced with this?

I find a lot of time people will say 'an inch' not realising how much an inch actually is.

As long as you're conditioning properly, ideally using a deep treatment once a week
month you'll be reet. If you don't keep an eye on the split ends, they will track up and require cutting higher than usual.
I only go every 6 months and that's because it's so thick I need it thinnning. By 6 months I look like Crystal Tips....

I have long hair (below shoulder length) and always end up leaving ages between haircuts. Not a deliberate ploy, I just don't get round to booking an appointment. My hair gets tanglier the longer it is since it's been cut - split ends I guess, so takes much longer to wash/condition/brush when it hasn't been cut for ages. Mostly I get it cut when I'm so annoyed with how long it's taking in the shower.

Nothing dreadful had happened so far (although my hair is poker straight, so I don't know if curly hair would behave differently).

Every 6 months (or longer) is fine, especially if you have curly or wavy hair as it doesn't need such a sharp style. However if you're going to leave it that long between trims, try to avoid heat styling as much as possible and use a decent conditioner.

I usually say "can you just take off the bare minimum please again trying to grow it"? I love the cuts I've had with this hairdresser but I've only used her twice. Once was having it cut short and it ended up even shorter than I'd expected yes, though I still really liked it. The next time was a little trim which still ended up a little bit shorter than I wanted but was a nice cut.

It's been about a month since my last cut and it looks fine. I've been doing a hair mask when I remember and also leaving it longer between washes. Will persevere. It's almost long enough to the back which will help in the in between, horrible stages.

I have mine cut every 6 months. Well, tbh, I have a hairdresser cut it once a year, I cut it the other time and trim my front layers every few months. Its not dyed and I don't use straighteners

I just had my hair cut for the first time in a year . By 6 months the cut had pretty much grown out so there wasn't much shape to it. Probably around the 8 month mark was when the split ends started to get quite bad and when I finally got it cut the hairdresser commented on how damaged it was . Although it probably didn't help that for half of the year I was swimming a lot and not bothering with any treatments.

I don't dye or straighten my hair, but do take DD swimming fairly frequently. No more than once a week though and I'm not under water very much.

Do you mind me asking how much you needed cut off after a year dropbear?

I have very long (past waist), very thick wavy hair. I hate it so it's thrown in a bobble most days, I tried getting it cut short once but apparently I need the weight of long hair as it puffed out like a mushroom no matter how much I straightened it 😂

I generally go once a year and need maybe 3-4 inches off. My poor hair is neglected though so hair in better condition may not need as much off the ends.

I have mine cut about once a year, I think I'm on about 14 months at the moment. My hair is v long, past my boobs and straight. I imagine curly hair might get dryer. Chlorine might make it dryer, comb through a teeny amount of conditioner to protect it maybe. I rarely use a hairdryer and if I do I use a smoothing product which protects from the heat. I am currently not dying it either which I am sure helps.

I swim a lot - use a swimming cap and Boots 3 in 1 swim and gym shampoo, then the matching conditioner and I don't get any issues at all

I haven't had my hair cut for nearly 2 years. It's quite wavy, so the ends don't look uneven. It's also in really good condition and I never get split ends.
I don't dye it or use heat on it though.

I've not cut mine for over two years. Before that I left it around two years as well! Don't think I'll cut it anytime soon. My hair is long and wavy, no layers to maintain. I tie it back most days and rarely blow dry or straighten it. If I did I think it would need to be cut more.

I get my hair cut less than once a year. I don't use heated styling products and I condition the ends every time I wash it but I don't use a conditioning treatment. It's straight and the ends aren't even but they're in good condition. I usually wear it in an updo with the ends tucked in so nobody sees them anyway.

I#m trying to grow mine too, but the payoff is that I'm not going to dye it (it had bleached highlights on hair that dated back to breastfeeding and started to break off) or use heated appliances. When it gets a bit warmer I will also try and avoid using a hairdryer although I've got a Ghd Aura which had been good to my hair until the haidresser put bleach upon bleach.
Vitamins help too. Mine is quite blunt and all one length, so I may get my mum to take a tiny amount off every 12 weeks and try and bear it until the end of the year.

I'm so pleased to read these. I'm definitely going to resist as long as possible. I don't know why I thought I had to have so many trims. I even know people who have their hair cut once or twice a year so don't know why I thought I couldn't do the same. Thanks all.

I used to be addicted to the salon. Four weekly appointments booked in advance, every other month I'd have approx 1/8 inch cut off my hair. Spending upward of £70 a visit.

I haven't had my hair cut in over three years (and that was a diy trim). Naturally wavy hair which ill cut again when it feels much too long. I wash it maximum twice a week (trying to use no 'poo method). I can't see myself using a hairdresser again.

Rockaby if you have short hair or very bleached hair I guess you would need to trim it a bit. I'm gutted I went back for bleached highlight top ups after growing my hair out so it was healthy. I had no idea it would make it break off! So I'm like you - determined to grow it!

No bleach here! I too have made that mistake once and vowed never again.

Well my highlights were done last January and looked lovely (on 'virgin hair') so I had them done again in March and then June. All bleached - not a high lift tint (which is why in the past my highlights haven't wrecked my hair). Am a bit gutted and had five inches off the ends. It's still a bit broken. The only thing is I have a heavy blunt fringe - so am going to trim that myself!
