Small waist/big hip people - where do you buy jeans?

I need a new pair of jeans. I generally fit in a size 14, but my waist is leaning more towards a 12 and my hips/arse more of a 16.

I want to move away from skinny jeans, and I've realised the 'mom jeans' style really suits me, as they are very high waisted but looser on the leg. I like to wear t-shirts tucked in, and I like a more traditional denim rather than the stretchy stuff they make skinnies out of.

The only problem is, I can't get any to fit around the waist and my hips. 16's fit lovely around the bottom, but I have a humongous gap around the back of the waistband. Too humongous to even remedy with a belt (and I don't like wearing a belt anyway). If I try a 14, they are too tight around the bottom and either fit or are slightly big around the waist.

Surely I'm not the only one with this problem? Where on earth can I buy jeans to fit?

I'm a classic hourglass and I also have very large feet which means skinny jeans can make me look like a golf club! I do find the GAP curvy or bootcut jeans the best (I have a pair of subtle flares (years old - they don't do them anymore) which I love). I need to buy some new ones too and am going to try the girlfriends.

The GAP in my city has closed down There's not another one for miles. I really need somewhere I can physically try on rather than order online, otherwise I'd try GAP.

Same shape here. Asda fit really well. Not very glamorous, but good for everyday jeans. Dorothy Perkins seem to be a better fit too.

I have this too. Am currently podgy of tummy, which goes some way to curing the small waist... but I'm losing weight so I'll soon be jeans hunting again. To add further insult, I naturally carry a lot of leg muscle, so skinnies & jegging types look rubbish on me. And I'm short...! Sorry that's no help. I might try the Gap ones when I'm thin again though.

Mine too Aloha. Big city too with big modern mall. I'm having to go to another town as I too prefer to try on rather than order 10 different pairs to try at home. I have bought from Esprit before. I've just been looking at Levis but they are too spendy for now. My body is shrinking as I've been losing weight. When I get to where I want to be I want to go to one of those shops that stock all the denim brands and advise you on your perfect pair.

Oh, and many styles atm seem to be cropped, or have frayed bottoms and I don't want either!

I think too big jeans look good just now, go up at least acouple of sizes in boyfriend jeans and pull in at the waist with belt. Look mum jeanesque and great with top tucked in.

I'm also losing weight so don't want to spend a fortune either. I'm running out of clothes to wear at the moment so need something to tide me over. I want cropped ankle grazer length so I guess that makes it slightly easier for me. I'll have to go in to town and just suck it up and try loads on. I'm 99% sure I'll come home with nothing though

I'm gutted I didn't realise about the local GAP closing. They were selling jeans off for £5!!

The best pair of jeans I've ever had were from M&S which I bought last year. They were skinny jeans though so a different fit, but these have good reviews so I'm going to try them. Only £25 too.

Gap was always a favourite for me but like many other places, the one nearby has closed down. Best fitting jeans I've bought lately (similar shape to you) are from Asos (own brand). I buy several styles and sizes and try them on at home as the daunting task of shopping for jeans that fit ok makes me want to stick forks in my eyes.

Levi's do a great mom type jean and there are nearly all denim so no stretch and fit really well. High waisted also so hold me in and stop the muffin top

Marks and Spencer Ozone straight leg jeans. £19, I have them in dark wash and black, they're the best fitting jeans I've ever tried on...and it's been a looooong search! I wear them rolled up, unrolled, perfect on the waist and thighs, never need a belt and they don't sag or lose shape. Perfect for me, a tall pear.

Get your jeans altered to take them in at the waist so they fit. I buy to fit my hips then have them adjusted at the waist and. My local place charges £7 a pair to put small darts in the waistband.

I've started to wear a belt recently and it has revolutionised my jean wearing. They look and fit much better now they're staying where they should.

I wear mostly GAP jeans as I find the waist/ hip/ thigh ration suits me quite well. Still better with a belt though.

I don't generally rate M&S, but their jeans do fit me, as they have a much better waist/hip ration than most, so hopefully those you've linked will work on you. I have a couple of pairs of the Sculpt and Shape ones - they're dearer than the normal ranges, but are very flattering.

Levi's suit me well and I have a similar type of figure to you. Also, much to my surprise, I found Jamie jeans from top shop fitted brilliantly.

I wear the Topshop 'mom' jeans they're sturdy pair of jeans unlike lots of their other styles.
I use to love the American Apparel easy jeans too but theyve gone now :(

I have a 26" waist and 38" hips, and Topshop mom jeans suited me, but the last time I was in there they'd changed the shape so the waist and bum were practically the same size and even a 12 didn't fit. I was raging. I have an old pair from there that fit beautifully but they're the trashed kind with holes all down the leg and it's too cold to wear them just now. I'm so bored of skinnies but Zara do ones I like, if I get a cropped pair they're the right length on me.

Tried on the M&S jeans, and the 14 fit around the waist but far too tight everywhere else. 16 were massive around the waist but still tight on legs and hips! I usually do well in M&S so I'm a bit gutted. Also tried some mom jeans on in primark and couldn't even get the 16 on at all Had the usual problem at Topshop too. Aghhhh!!

What style of Levi's do people recommend?

Just wanted to mention Monki jeans - I have found their stretch skinnies to be incredible and I have a small waist and big bum/hips.

Their sizes tend to be waist sizes in inches which I find makes it easier to order online. I believe they have a store in Carnaby Street if you are anywhere near London.

burrito unfortunately I'm up north in Leeds! I don't have as much of a problem with skinnies because they are usually stretchy and tighter, but I'm trying to find some less stretchy looser denim. I'll definitely look monki up when I need to buy skinnies though, thank you

J Brand boot cut. Pricey but worth it. I am 25 waist and 37 hips and I take the 27 inch in this size and they work perfectly. Only pair of jeans/trousers I actually own (I own two pairs at any given time: black and dark navy) as dresses suit me better and they last about 2 years (more if you redye) so worth it, I think!
