Commuting shoes

I start a new job in 3 weeks time. During the day I wear either a trouser suit or (mostly) a smart dress and jacket with medium heels.

I'm going from a 15 minute drive to work to a one hour packed commute in the city of London involving a 10 minute walk and a 20 minute walk at either end, so I'm thinking I will need shoes to commute in and then change when I get to the office.

Do I wear trainers? Or comfy flats? What do most people do?

I see loads of people in trainers on the tube.

The only reason I would not go for trainers would be if I were wearing trousers that required heels to not drag on the ground.

Wearing trainers is in a way BETTER than wearing semi-smart shoes that are not the shoes you really want to wear.

Semi-smart shoes, it will look like those are your shoes and it will look like your shoes are not-great-looking.

Trainers are so obviously commuting shoes that nobody will think about whether they look nice or "go".

This is all assuming that anyone looks at your shoes ever...

Trainers. Hard wearing and comfy. Plus save money as work shoes last way longer if they only go as far as a lunchtime trip to pret!

I've got black leather ecco trainers that are very smart and neat on my enormous size 8s.

I wear boots in the winter and toms in the summer. it means I dont get wet feet. I have two smart pairs of black leather boots, knee high for dresses and skirts, ankle boots for trousers. I agree that it is one of the rules of city commuting, people just wear trainers.

There are lots of great trainers out there now that look nothing like those dull white ones everyone wore circa 1995.

I see lots of women on the tube in trainers and dresses/skirts.

I'm puzzled about the trouser suit thing too Trills. If you wear a medium heel at work then surely your trousers will be too long when you wear flats on the commute, and will ruin the bottom of the trousers.

I hadn't even thought about trouser length as at the moment I wear the same shoes all day. I guess the heels I usually wear are medium to low - 2 inches or less so if I wear trainers there shouldn't be too much difference
