What do you wear for a night out if you're late 30s?

What do you wear if you're going out to a bar, restaurant or party and you are late 30s?

My casual look is skinny jeans, Chelsea boots with a little heel and tops or jumpers with a sort of batwing shape.

My work look is skinny gap trousers, heels, blouse and blazer.

I don't have a going out look and I need one as I just end up wearing my casual or work clothes and feeling a bit boring.

Any ideas please?

At this time of year mine seems to be jumper dress and and ankle boots but that's more down the pub than 'out out'!

Watching with interest Smile

I have a similar scenario myself Hmm

I did buy two dresses in December and wore both to seperate functions but need some ideas and inspiration

I'm 35 and have 2 main going out 'looks' not that I get out too much!

(P)leather pencil skirt, plain t-shirt or jumper, opaques & ankle boots

Black Skinnies with dressy top and heels. Top can be a silk tank or an embroidered blouse (got a long sleeve sheer one in Zara before Xmas and have worn it loads)

missyB1 · 02/02/2017 14:23

Ok I'm late 40s (wish I was late 30s) but going to answer anyway! Grin

Going out look is just above knee length dress - must have sleeves, glossy tights and patent ballet pumps.

LoupGarou · 02/02/2017 14:48

I have a couple of go to outfits...

  1. black jersey tulip dress (mid thigh in length) with 3/4 sleeves which I wear with tan suede flat other the knee boots and a leather and pearl strand wrap choker
  2. black leather leggings with a black sheer blouse, black vest top underneath, stiletto biker boots and silver collar type statement necklace.

Thanks everyone. All your outfits sound lovely.
I am quite tempted by a leather pencil skirt. Do you wear a midi or mini? Would a midi with bare legs and ankle boots look ok or a bit frumpy?

Well, it is a very 'in' look, but requires you to be very thin and quite hipster-ish of hairdo/rest of look.

Looks good with a satin-y bomber jacket, but again, avoid if over a size 10 or so...

rightknockered · 02/02/2017 17:06

I think the midi skirt sounds great. You don't have to thin to pull it off. Just wear a shortish top or one that you can tuck in. Better still, a body

Tightarseinleggings · 02/02/2017 17:07

Im 42 and id wear super tight jeans or wet look leggings with a nice chiffon top. Heels, very high

TickledOnion · 02/02/2017 20:11

I tried a leather midi on in Tesco (I was passing) with a graphic t-shirt tucked in. I'm too short to wear it with ankle boots but it looked good pulled up to just above knee length.

Does anywhere sell not-quite-mini fake leather pencil skirts?

I have this one in the standard length but perhaps the tall version would be a bit longer for you?

My going out outfit consists of skinny jeans, black tank top, black suede court shoes and some dazzling jewellery. It's just my weekend wardrobe with my weekday shoes and jazzed up with a bit of bling. I go out so rarely in the evenings I don't think its worth having separate outfits for it

cheminotte · 02/02/2017 21:36

Watching as I could do with inspiration. I tend to concentrate on the top half as my rare nights out are normally a meal with DP. I have a couple of special sleeveless tops that I wear with smart black trousers.

Maudlinmaud · 02/02/2017 21:44

Im bang in my mid 30s. It's a tough one isn't it. This weekend we are out for a family meal saturday evening, I think I might wear a jumpsuit for the first time ever! Over Christmas I wore a lot of pencil dresses.

fiorentina · 02/02/2017 22:09

Leather skirt and patterned silk shirt or perhaps coated skinnies, heeled boots and a more sheer top with camisole underneath. My friends wear similar outfits with funky accessories or plain ish dresses, black tights and shoe boots/ non clumpy ankle boots.

PNGirl · 02/02/2017 22:16

I'm struggling with this myself - tomorrow is drinks out with husband and workmates in a "not trying too hard" bar so I'm trying to work out how to dress up my chelsea boots, leather jacket and dark skinnies. I have a red tunic top with crisscross back I might wear.

creamcheeseandlox · 04/02/2017 07:10

Last week I went out and wore: tight, black flat fronted skinny trousers with a velvet flock pattern on, a sort of deep v neck line gold loose top that falls off one shoulder, very high shoes and some nice jewellery oh and a metallic smokey eye and big hair. Grin

I also have some dressy dresses in my wardrobe too. Pencil (wiggle) dresses, and also a few floaty pleated midi skirts that I'd wear with heels and a plain top with a huge statement necklace.

creamcheeseandlox · 04/02/2017 07:12

Oh and I'm 37 btw.

Newbrummie · 04/02/2017 08:56

I'm out tonight and need a cream top and shoes to go with my (size) sort of oxblood pleather midi skirt. Left it a bit late but only tried it on this morning and it fits !!
