What exactly is Mint Velvet?!?

So even though there is a Mint Velvet in Muswell Hill quite near where I live, I didn't realise it was an actual shop. Always thought it was one of those random local "boutiques".

Just realised it's a chain but who's it for? The clothes look slouchy but too silky and velvety for work but too slobby for evening. Is it like Toast with less of an edge? Rip-off Ghost? I know that means it's probably not aimed at me but I can't get a handle on who or when you would wear the clothes.

I'm mid 30s, usually shop at &Other Stories/Cos/Whistles and had literally never heard of it before I went on maternity leave.

.. or maybe i'm doing wrong ... which is highly likely Grin

Their leggings are apparently the best in the business!

Abraiid2 · 19/01/2017 14:13

I have a great MV leather jacket in nude. My 18-year-old borrows it.

BigGreenOlives · 19/01/2017 14:19

I think it was set up by a group of 3 women who used to work at Principles.

Floisme · 19/01/2017 14:34

In their defence, their tube skirt (sorry can't link at moment) looks promisingly unfloppy. Thick with good smoothing and sucking in powers. Quite long but fold over bit at top so can adjust length. Been hunting a grey one for ages to replace useless piece of Baukjen film flam.

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 19/01/2017 17:43

The grey tube skirt is very good - I've just bought it. Really good thick jersey; I'd recommend it.

Dieu · 19/01/2017 17:49

Wish they did it in maxi length! I've been looking for a good ankle length pencil/tube skirt.

Gillybobs · 19/01/2017 18:03

I have loads of mint velvet....in navy, black, cream....and shock horror grey. I've had loads of very wearable blouses, long line cardigans, biker shape jackets in cotton instead of leather (which adds bulk i feel), fab shoes, necklaces I've worn to death. Nothing I've bought has been slouchy or asymmetric although I've seen those items in the store.

Its like anywhere else i shop, some of it i like, some of it isn't for me. It certainly doesn't irritate me that is not all my cup of tea.

Floisme · 19/01/2017 18:56

Dieu it might adjust to maxi length if you unfold the bit at the waist, although I think it would be hard to walk in.

Difficultyear2015 · 19/01/2017 19:11

I'm 31 and buy a few bits from mint velvet.
As does my 61 year old mother.

We both love it. The colours and styles are flattering.

A few years ago when I hadn't heard of it I thought it was clothes for the over 60's

Pistachiois50pmore · 19/01/2017 19:22

biggreenolives Principles! That takes me back to being a kid watching my mum try to buy appropriate work wear. I'd forgotten all about them.

Pistachiois50 you're making me feel old, I remember when Principles & Next first opened. I was never a Principles girl/woman.

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 19/01/2017 22:24

Dieu I agree with Flo - think you might find it hard to walk in if you unrolled it as the jersey is thick and it's fitted with no split.

I'm 54 and I love Mint Velvet. Can always find something I like and DH says that he knows he can go there and get me something for birthdays/Christmas and he won't have a problem pick the wrong thing

I've got a few tops, couple of cardis and jumpers and a few dresses. Good fit, nice fabric and wearing well. In fact I've got a soft peachy/nude jumper with buttons down the back that looks good with jeans, and I get nice comments everytime I wear it.

Long may it continue on the High Street IMO.

Dieu · 20/01/2017 09:08

Ok, thanks anyway Smile There's a MV in the city where I live, so doesn't hurt to try one on I guess. Cue me, trying to walk and tripping up in the changing room!
