Does anyone else have this 'violin hips' body shape? How do you dress?

I have 'violin hips' so the only clothes that are really flattering are dresses that flare out a bit. Anything tight fitting and I look terrible. With jeans if I wear regular (not high waisted jeans) the they sit in the 'dip' and give me a muffin top look. High waisted and they have a baggy bit where the dip is.

Is anyone else this shape? What do you do?

(I've attached a picture which best shows what I mean)

I once spent the best part but if the day googling my body type and found this which calls it figure 8 shape but often that refers to hourglasses.

At the moment I am overweight and have a whole spare tyre but even in my youth when my bmi was 19 I never got completely rid.

Very difficult to dress if you aren't slim

The bulge in that photo is from the gut not hips! Those aren't really violin hips - it's the fat gut that's the problem.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 24/01/2017 01:21

Oh my God yes. I didn't realise it was a thing. I actually thought it was down to years of wearing super low rise jeans as a teen having, erm, pushed my fat out permanently. I don't know why I thought that, I am usually quite intelligent I promise.

I hate it!!! Hate wearing a bikini especially. I'll only wear high waisted trousers and avoid anything cropped on top too.

Bit rude Tippexy considering the many PPs saying that photo could be of their body.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/01/2017 08:24

Shout I actually thought it was from wearing knickers that were too tight round the hip area and had sort of squeezed the fat permanently out of that area
Appears we are both equally misguided!
Very hard to dress it. What irony, it's the part of my body that holds the least fat that makes the rest of me hard to dress.....

ShoutOutToMyEx · 24/01/2017 08:26

Glad I'm not the only one Grin

I've never worn low rise jeans... my fatless size 6 days were back when size 6 only just properly existed around 1994. It was all high waists then thank you very much :D I remember thinking low risers looked disgusting when they started appearing around 96 ish and I always avoided them due to my shape

violin hips are definitely a body thing that can occur with no influence whatsoever

but yes that picture it does seem that is caused or worsened by fat and/or low risers

I have violin hips but my 'in dip' bit seems a bit lower than in the picture, I am also really short waisted so cant wear high waisted trouser styles, or else im just a pair of boobs on top of a pair of jeans!

Its a bugger to dress, everyone tells me I should wear Nigella-esque dresses to show off my curves but I cant because I look like im wearing underwear that is too tight and too low!

I really hate fit the flare style too. At the moment im just wearing baggy Cos style dresses to hide it all!

NettleCake · 25/01/2017 09:27

Me too! But I hide mine with clothes.

I wear fit-and-flare dresses a lot (tight on waist then flare from top of hip bone). Also loose fitting tunic dresses over leggings or wrap-dresses that hug the upper waist then skim. High waisted skirts made of heavy non-clingy jersey material. Low-cut jeans with long top over (if the jeans finish on hip the gap is disguised). I also have higher cut jeans with buttons down each hip, as it bulks out the gap.

Yes! I have them. I have always been a size 6-8 and go to them gym 3-4 times a week. I am 24 and have had really low self-esteem around my hips for the past 6 years.
I first started to notice them when I was 14 and my mum couldn't find me any school trousers less than a size 14- so baggy at the thighs but super tight on my hips. I was a size 6 on my entire body, including my thighs but a size 14+ around my hips.
I get away with wearing size 8-10 jeans now if they are high waisted and elastic.
My hips aren't fat, it's pure pelvis bone. My pelvis is just too high up in my body causing a big indent before my thighs start.
I've attached a photo of me in a really slim dress- please ignore the Halloween vampire fangs in my mouth.
