What sort of thing would a teenager wear over a more formal dress?

DD 14 is going to a formal occasion next month and will be wearing a sleeveless dress. It's a short, skater-style lacey dress. She'll need to wear something over the top at least to arrive in. Any suggestions that won't make her look middle-aged? I don't want to spend too much and actually might look on ebay once I know what sort of thing I'm looking for. She's very petite so needs to be careful clothes don't swamp her.

Not helpful because not cheap, but dd would wear leather jacket (in her case total bargainatious find from the charity shop!) If you could find one on ebay dd wears hers an awful lot.

I teach, and the students arrived to the Christmas party in a mixture of leather jackets and fur coats.

Should say my dd is 14 and pretty petite (5 foot / 7 stone ish)

We bought it for a winter wedding but she has worn it loads. It looks beautiful and she says she feels very 'posh' in it!

Miss Selfridge had a few similar in different colours I think, and they are very good for petite sizes if your dd is teeny

Thanks for the ideas she has a dark faux suede bomber jacker so I'll see how that looks. I hadn't thought of that. I did think faux fur would go well with the dress but she's a young looking 14 (year 9) and may be a better option for later years.

Agree not a bomber jacket...the only way that might work is if the dress were really formal...and a skater dress isn't.

What on earth would that be? I have seen film stars look great in long dress and denim jacket but you are not doing long. My dog has a woolly blanket cardigan in his bed - what modern teenager would wear that? If it is a fairly formal dress and a skater dress is a young version of that, then it needs a formal jacket. To maximise wear after, faux fur. So many in the sales.

I would have said a leather jacket but I love the New Look cream faux fur that manumission posted. And that's the one that is only £15!

It's really not the sort of thing she'd wear. I'm not resisting the suggestions due to my own preferences. I too think the faux fur jackets are perfect for this age group for this type of occasion.

Okay, I'm home again and have looked online. I will see what DD says. It's definitely the sort of thing DD2 would wear so wouldn't be wasted if DD1 never wore it again.

If she's taking it off as soon as she sits down it's ok. Remember she's 14 it's not like she's meeting the queen! maybe she really takes a lot of pride in how she looks but I wouldn't spend £50 on coat. I was like you and probably cared more about DD dance than she did most of the girls their had a nice dress and the coat they wore to school maybe a different one but they weren't fancy. My daughter says that a bomber jacket would be "so cute" with a skater dress and pumps or boots with a small heal and said if it's glamorous put her hair in a fancy style add some jewellery and maybe a little makeup but that can all cost under £20 (if you have the shoes)
