What about a wrap dress and heels ?

alternatively (as already said) some smart trousers with either a floaty or strappy top and heels.

With either you could wear a jacket over the top for the day and take off jacket and add necklace etc for evening.

Everyone wears jeans in London, you can't go wrong with that. Most people are very casual - you will stick out more if you dress up, and in the week most are going out straight from work so it is not really a dress up thing. Accessories are your best bet, maybe a thin scarf tied around your neck. What shape are you?

You are no bumpkin - different strokes for different folks. I am originally from Nottm and they dress differently up there I think. Smart dark jeans, nice top and fitted jacket would be good. as long as you have a nice bag and shoes you will be fine. Trust me - I am a stylist and not one of my friends makes a move without consulting with me first!

and most establishments in London are a okay for jeans.
