Teenager, short dress....and tights?!

Hi.
My 13 yo dd is going to her first proper disco/party tomorrow. She's got a new short, tightish, black dress to wear. (I'm happy with this!). She will wear it with converse boots and a denim jacket over the top. I think she should wear tights (was thinking black opaques). She is insistent that no one else will be wearing tights and it's not the done thing.

Apart from the fact it's bastard freezing cold out, what do you all think about the tights thing?

All advice most welcome!

How about some decent tan tights...or is that certain coolness death?

Assuming the dress is sufficiently long to be decent (and it sounds like it is if you are happy with it) then I would let her go bare legged if that is what she wants. At her age wearing the 'right' thing and fitting in with your mates is much more important than keeping warm.

Can you get her thick black tights with a pattern? Or coloured tights to match her top? Not sure if either is cool though!

Don't make her wear tights. She wants to look cool, she'll look freezing!

You're all saying what I'm thinking! Battling between allowing her to make her own mind up, but also I think that the dress is very short, and would be better with tights.

I really don't want to battle with her about this. We seem to be having enough differences of opinion as it is.

If she goes out with tights on, she'll just take them off when she gets there.

Has she seen the back view?

When my dd was about this age we had exactly the same discussion, she won, then came home furious with me because I hadn't told her that her dress was so short at the back!

Could you get her glittery tights to wear with it instead of boring black? I got some from Topshop last year and wore them with a plain black dress and black flat Chelsea boots. Another option might be a nude fishnet so it looks like bare legs?

Some things are worth falling out over but I don't think tights are one of them.

Presumably she has a bag. Get her to take a pair of (opaque but not too thick) tights in her bag - "just in case you feel cold". Then she has the option to put them on if it turns out not everyone is bare-legged or she finds it too short without or she does feel the cold and sees sense.

Would she consider leggings?

I think as long as her body core is covered and warm she'll not come to any harm. Though she may learn corn beef legs are not attractive

Assuming she is wearing knickers (because no arse is attractive) let her freeze.

If you are worried about bottom exposure why don't you cut the legs of a pair of opaque tights to make mini shorts.

Surely she'd be inside for most of it? It's not like queueing for a nightclub!

So long as her knickers can't be seen I think no tights are ok.
