What should one be wearing this season?

I am forty, with 2 young children and always seem to be in jeans ,a sloppy jumper and boots for the school run.

Some mothers turn up fully made up and dressed in the latest fashions.
Where do they find the time and the inclination?

What would anyone suggest that is practical and stylish?

I too am forty

this is my usual sort of attire if I feel I have to compete with yumminess early in the morning

mammaduck · 15/02/2007 15:25

I'd be interested in this too.

Am a perpetual scruff on the days I'm not at work.

I can do 'smart for work' ok.

I can do the 'get dressed up for an evening out' (not that I go out anywhere posh much any more )

but can't do the 'casual' thing. Just end up looking dead scruffy usually in frayed cords with the knees nearly out and a top with whatever DS had for lunch smeared over it.

Nice.

Sometimes fantasize that Trinny and Susannah will waltz over the horizon and transform me. Ever hopeful.

lol Countess!

CountessDracula · 15/02/2007 15:26

I just snurk at their insecurity

bundle · 15/02/2007 15:27

cd that's lovely, do they have it in blue?

CountessDracula · 15/02/2007 16:28

Oh yes just slap a bit of paint on

Maybe these mothers are on their way to work i have just htought

MillyM · 15/02/2007 16:33

I'm a firm believer in keeping it simple and accessorising! So tend to do most mornings in jeans, black sweater, ethnic necklace / scarf sort of thing. Although recently I'm a huge fan of smock top over skinny (ish) jeans, as long as you choose the right top you don't look like you're trying to be a teenager!!

hoolagirl · 15/02/2007 17:13

God I usually just pick up whats i flung on the bedroom floor the night before.
Usually manage to get properly ready at lunchtime and not before!

doormat · 15/02/2007 17:19

shift dresses
are still in

either over jeans, leggings or on their own glammed up for a night out

also cobalt blue is good color this season

brimfull · 15/02/2007 17:23

well I'm currently into casual skirts and comfy boots.HAve lost weight and all my jeans now look crap on me and haven't got any new ones yet as still have more weight I want to lose.
Hate putting on tights though

carriepops · 15/02/2007 17:25

Tunics are nice at the moment, over skinny or straight jeans. Really comfy and hide my terrible tummy!

slouch · 15/02/2007 17:30

Doormat - my car is cobalt blue - do you think that counts?

doormat · 15/02/2007 17:32

slouch yep if it is this seasons hottest color

mystic · 15/02/2007 17:38

Thanks for all your replys.

Countess-that'a what I feel like wearing most mornings when I look in the mirror.

Tunics and smocks sound good.
Also svarves are a good idea to brighten up a winter coat.

had thought about colouring my hair a reddish brown colour?

Useually put a bit of mascara on and a nude coloured lip gloss if I have time!!!!

It's just some people bung on anything and it all seems to fit where as I try it and look uncordinated.

Colours throw me too.
Useually go for black and browns and would love to try red or maybe dark greens.

I am sure that although you feel a scruffbag, you actually don't look it! It's usually cos you're bored with your own clothes - to any person external to you and your wardrobe you probably look great!

(Advice based on survey of my sister - she never feels smart or together and frequently looks fab despite how she feels!)

dueat44 · 15/02/2007 19:28

pyjamas. nowt wrong with pyjamas for school run. and after ...

Aufish · 15/02/2007 19:38

well the fashion house of homer simpson appears to be wearing a "safety salamander" outfit....

FrayedKnot · 15/02/2007 19:48

I have just bought two tunic dresses to wear over jeans / crop jeans ..have also bought a pair of leggings and may wear when weather is warmer and can wear pumps...

Aufish · 15/02/2007 19:51

Yeah that is the kind of thing I am wearing this season. Didn't ever think I would go back to the hell of leggings but I have! Can't wait for the warmer weather though.
