What is the best time of year to go blonde?

I'm pig sick of doing my roots every 2-3 weeks, plus I don't want to end up with a badger stripe -so I've decided to go blonde

really not ready for totally grey just yet

No objection to to bit of grey, i'm knocking on 40, but i'm nearly white around my temples and have a lot of grey along my parting and behind my ears, in my fringe etc etc

Am I better waiting for summer?

I'm fairly cool toned and don't want the schock of winter skin and freshly blonde hair I don't think

Or is it better to do it now so I can play around with makeup over the winter?

I have no clue and a ton of hair so I know it won't be cheap and I want to get it right

I am 80% grey. I've tried going dark,ombré and not I get full head hightlights and then she just puts a pearl brown (matrix) through the rest of my hair. This means when my horrid grey roots come through they are barely visible. Also every other time I go I can get away with the pearl brown painted on my roots and a few packets on my parting.
Being dark and grey iykwim is hard work imo.

Get it done professionally the first time. There are many different shades of blond: from ash to golden blond. Your hairdresser will help you decide.

Also pondering this route, I'm mousey at the back, grey at the front, all new growth seems to be grey. For years I henna-ed, but I hate the two tone effect I get now.
I've just lost about 50% of my hair due to low iron (and probably age), so I'm thinking this wouldn't be the time to start dying it. Wondering if there's a blonde semi perm that I can just put over the grey...maybe it will then look like highlights .

If you have pale skin and are cool toned, then you need to avoid golden or caramel shades like the plague. An ash blonde would work. You don't say what your natural colour is? If you're a brunette, then light blonde may be too much. A rough guide would be to look at your eyebrows and the colour of the hair on your arms. If it's dark brown then it will be hard to carry off a light blonde.

All over blonde will disguise grey better but it is a high maintenance style. You'll still need roots done and blonde hair requires more care to keep it in good condition and regular toning to prevent brassiness. Having said that, I dye mine blonde and love it.

If you get the right shade of blonde for you, then you'll actually need less make up. I don't think the time of year comes into it.
You could ask for a set of T-bar highlights if you're not brave enough to get it all blonde. That would be highlights around your face and along your parting.

I also don't think the time of year matters, because well I guess uou intend to stay blonde. So really it's about picking the right blonde for you.

Callar a semi permanent won't lighten your hair so you'd need a permanent dye containing bleach. It would be best to ask a hairdresser to look at your hair because it is notoriously difficult to lighten hair with henna in it. You might have to wait until the henna grows out.
You could try a purple toner on your hair. That takes any yellowish tones out of grey and gives it a lovely shine and would be gentle on your hair .

I would say this time of year is perfect as colour fades more in the sun and also hair grows more quickly in the summer so in autumn/winter you shouldn't have the sun fade so the colour will stay bright and fresh for longer and you will also get slightly longer until root re-growth needs touching up.

Agree with previous posters who've recommended going to a professional - get recommendations in your area.

I've got colour build up on my hair so would need to get it done professionally -I can see me going a lovely shade of orange otherwise

It sounds as though you would suit blonde hair- go for it! And yes to a hairdresser[ smile].

Ilost - I was kind of hoping the grey ( which is very plale grey)) would carry a blond colour without bleaching, I have in the past, temporarily dyed it pink and lilac and the colour shows up nicely.

Callar Superdrug do some wash in wash out shaders and toners which are really good. They won't damage your hair and give a lovely shine and tint. The cool blonde shade might be worth a go.They're called Colour Effects, little silver bottle, and you use it like a conditioner leaving it on for five minutes then rinsing out.

I am naturally blonde but alternated between bright blonde and dark blonde. I usually go bright blonde in summer, I toned it down recently and got the best of both worlds! Pic attached! You could try something like that.

I'm a natural blonde, cool-toned, and I let my roots get mousy darker and longer in midwinter. It feels natural and good. I noticed that even my 6-y-o who is a head-turningly blonde tends to get a darker cast to her white blonde locks in midwinter. The same with DD1 who is a darker blonde - she goes naturally ombre.

I tend to go blonder in Feb/March, mousy hair looks awful in bright sunlight.

If you are cool-toned, you will need ashy blonde highlights (+ might consider silver shampoo for maintenance), anything brassy and yellowish will look harsh and off.
