can you put a semi-permanent hair dye on top of highlighted hair?

my natural colour light brown is coming through where my highlights are growing out. I was just going to put on a drak blonde semi-perm colour

Can you put it on roots only? Not sure if that would work, but might preserve your highlights while dealing with the 'root' problem...

I'm pretty sure it usually says on the instruction to do roots only if hair is highlighted, but I would just do what's easiest.

I did it some years back, and the previously highlighted bits turned green. However, I doubt I bothered reading the instructions first.
