5 k round trip on foot to and from work - /work shoes last a month! What do you think of these? Smart enough for suited kind of environment

I always wear trousers by the way, I know they'd look odd with a skirt.

Can you not leave your work shoes at work and wear trainers to and from work? But the linked boots should have lasted longer than a month!

Another vote for trainers and changing in work.

Can you wear eg trainers to walk to and from office but leave smart shoes to wear when you get there?

I quite like the ones you have linked to but hard to tell what they would be like on. They could look funky or a bit frumpy

The boots I linked to are ones I'm thinking of buying!! I've no idea if they are hard wearing. I bought lovely laceup boots less than a month ago with a small block heel and they're in need of re-heeling already.

I know I could change to runners but I hate leaving my runners lying around. I feel so weird with a nice coat, smart trousers and shirt and then trainers.

Trainers then change. Channel Working Girl. I don't usually have to be smart for work but when I do, I love the shift dress/tights/Adidas runners feel #winningatlife

What about MBT types-they do some smarter ones nowadays? And you'd get the bum firming benefits of the 5k walk.

I walk at least 5 miles every day and I use either New Balance trainers or these walking shoes - I change when I arrive to normal smart clothes (I'm senior professional and keep a selection of jackets and dressy shoes at work - hide them in a cupboard filing cabinet or shoe box if it feels weird to have them around). They are hardwearing and I need a new pair about once a year. I use shoes like yours for short walks.

I used to hate trainers but you can find quite dressy/minimalistic trainers these days. And I got knee pain when I wore flat boots for longer walks but it disappeared when I switched to NB and Salomons.

I saw these trainers at Mango today, they would work with many work outfits. Nike Thea is another really popular alternative.

Definitely trainers and change. My work shoes last forever as the furthest I go in Them is pret!

Trainers or Uggs and change - At least people understand the "look" is temporary.

Another vote for wearing trainers / other decent walking shoes and changing at work. I used to cover a similar distance and, frankly, my feet would have absolutely stank had I worn leather shoes to walk in and then the same shoes all day at work .

Can you wear trainers and run it? My commute is five miles or so each way, and is a great way to get my exercise in.

I have similar issues to you OP, with a slightly longer walk. I have found the following tips useful:

• buy "proper" shoes, not fashion shoes i.e. Clarkes good, Office bad
• Doc Martin's last forever. They are chunky ish but I have some black Mary jane style Ines which are smart I think and polish up a treat
• Reheeling is cheaper than constantly buying new shoes. Do it before they really need it, and ask for extra tough rubber heels. At my local cobbler this is £2 more expensive but they last about three times s long so well worth it

I do the same distance and wear Nikes. I keep my work shoes at work.

I just ordered a pair from Clarks. Less 'funky' than the Geox ones but they will give me a bit of a lift (I'm only 5'1") but having examined the sole as much as you can on line, they look like they'd be easy to walk in. They were 'only' 70 euro so less than half the price of the fit flop ones I sent back and the geox ones I was considering.

Crispy Duck, yes I definitely have a pile of footwear that could be rejuvenated by a cobbler. There is a cobbler in my town but he is in his 70s and he just opens when he feels like it I think, or if there's rhyme or reason to his schedule I can't figure it out! I end up carrying shoes and boots around for days hoping he'll open on a whim

I used to walk to work and always wore trainers and changed... much more comfortable and also I don't think anyone bats an eyelid on the corporate wear plus trainers look when it's in commuting hours.

I walk 3+ miles home - trainers/Ecco walking shoes and leave change of shoes in my office (flats, heels, boots for variety). Your feet and back will thank you. Try to get past looking feeling it looks odd...take comfort in fact you are doing a healthy walk, getting fresh air. I very much look on the folk sat on their own in a car clogging up the city as looking odd instead of me bouncing along walking home listening to music - good for my physical and mental health.
