For the long waisted, where is good for evening wear?

I need an party/cocktail dress. I struggle so badly because the waist never falls in the right place. To make it harder, I have big boobs so need to be able to wear a bra too. Nothing ever fits rights. I'm 5'6", so although the idea of getting a dress from a "tall" range seem like a good idea, they're too long on me. Any time I have to buy a dress I end up very depressed! Any suggestions from other people with a long torso, on where is good to look for evening/cocktail dresses?

How about buying a tall dress and taking it up (or having it taken up by a professional)? Just a simple hemming jobbie shouldn't to difficult (or expensive) and would mean you could get a perfect fit.

Jessie - I'm looking at the Next label stuff at the moment (although preferably want cocktail dress length rather than long).
ChickyDuck - I've considered Tall ranges, but I worry it will put the shape out if I shorten them. I'm going to try though

Have a look at lipstick, I've always thought it was cheap tat but the material on my dress is lovely and holds you in .. mine is a very posh ball . I would have preferred a hotter dress as in short and am having this one taken up but there were loads I liked . Also monsoon have a lovely dress I saw .. il try and find it .

My tall friend had this on the other day and is lovely ! .. I think it would suit a longer waist .. there are loads on their website though.

Also the great thing about ordering from next is you can order as much as you like without parting with any money .. so you can try them all at home .

I've recently got a couple of dresses from tall ranges. I'm only 5'7" and they weren't long on me. I'm also quite short waisted and the belts were too high Confused

Bear with me on this one.

You didn't say what size you are and I have just pasted a link to Larger Ladies' site.

I'm 5'8" large of nork and have the same ' waistline ends up as Empire line look' - I'm looking at you Hobbs!

I'm a size 12 and have an earlier version of this Chesca dress ( in black, no chiffon inserts) I'll be wearing it again tonight at a 'posh do' . The pleating and no waistline are very flattering.

Another thought, and less expensive would be Pepperberry, whose frocks accommodate the large of chest.

I'll go and have a look and see if they have anything suitable. Their stuff can be a bit hit or miss.

Thisismynewname123 · 21/10/2016 11:51

WhiteHair - I'm a 12 Smile. Not plus size (yet). I'll see if there's a regular collection on that website though.

I have bought dresses from Pepperberry before. They are hit or miss. If they don't have a defined waist, they can be fine, but anything with a defined waist is particularly short and looks ridiculous! They don't have any party dresses that appeal to me at the moment (although the dress that I've been wearing to all posh occasions over the last couple of years was actually from there).

Jessie - I've tried everything in Monsoon already. The waist sits too high on me in everything they have. But thanks for the suggestions.

I'm going to look at some tall ranges and see what I can order from Next or Asos, but hoping for some different inspiration that I wouldn't have thought of already (and preferably under about £150)

Buy in a bigger size and have it altered. It's not too expensive and so much better to have something that fits well. I have a very small long waist so quite often do this.

imjessie · 21/10/2016 12:09

Ok .. have you looked in coast ?

Ujjayi · 21/10/2016 15:28

I buy from the tall ranges & take it up myself if necessary. Or I make the entire thing myself (I'm a designer so that's straightforward for me but less so if you aren't handy with a sewing machine). If you fancy having something made to measure, a good seamstress would be able to alter the bodice of a commercial pattern to give you a perfect fit and it shouldn't cost you any more than a regular size would as it is very simply a case of adding a few centimetres to the pattern pieces & therefore not remotely time-consuming.
