White jeans in any other season but summer?

Omgkitties · 06/10/2016 04:13

BIL and his girlfriend came to vist so today technically yesterdaywas the rare occasion I changed out of my pyjamas.

We went out for lunch and I was wearing white jeans, BILs girlfriend made a comment about how my outfit was very summery and how odd it is to wear white jeans at this time of year. I ofc asked what she meant and she told me white jeans are only acceptable in the summer.

It's bloody freezing where I live so I was also wearing a jumper and ugg boots so hardly like it was a summer outfit. Hmm

I've never, in all my 21 years, heard of a certain colour jean only being acceptable in one season so it's been bugging me since.

Please tell me I'm still okay to wear my white jeans in the colder months, they're my favourite! Sad

Is this the sort of stuff that keeps you up until 4am? 😂 Don't worry it is for me too

I've never heard of that either. Do you usually get alone? Perhaps she was just being bitchy and trying to get to you. If so wear the jeans with pride whenever she is around.

You wear what you want sweet, if I still had the figure for white jeans I'd be wearing them too. Shorts and crop tops aren't acceptable this time of year, a jumper, uggs and white jeans are perfectly fine!

Omgkitties · 06/10/2016 04:19

Haha no, I can't sleep and I just started thinking about it again.

She's 18 and I don't think she has ever liked me so god knows what she was trying to do.

Brilliant. Was really hoping I don't have to put them away again until summer!

Is this the same girl with the noisy anklet? If so I'd be telling her she can't judge my jeans when she's wearing hooker jewellery from the 80s Grin in a jokey way though as not to be rude not really, you can be rude

NotMoreFootball · 06/10/2016 04:37

I live in the Southern United States and the rule here seems to be that white is only acceptable from Memorial Day until Labor Day (end of May to beginning of Sept) but the temperature is still 90 degrees so there's no way I'm switching to darker denim yet!

Omgkitties · 06/10/2016 05:35

Willy yep, same girl haha.

Notmorefootball No white at all? Couldn't do that haha.

I've actually heard of this, but it's one of those old school rules like 'you can't wear navy blue and black' that I think is ridiculous!

Also, even if she did think you didn't look 'appropriate for the season' or whatever, what a cow to come out and say so. She sounds a right bitch.

Fozzleyplum · 06/10/2016 06:28

She needs to read Ines de la Fressange's style book; she advocates wearing white jeans with a jumper in Winter. She also puts black with ( french) navy.

Louisajohnson224 · 06/10/2016 07:50

No way ..you can make white jeans fit in any season.
I normally wear mine with a wine coloured jumper and ankle boots.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/10/2016 07:55

I personally wouldn't wear white jeans in winter. But I have no idea why, I have no problem with other people doing so, and I certainly wouldn't ever criticise someone else's outfit, ever.

Liiinoo · 06/10/2016 08:57

Lol at this! I had a similar convo with my DD (21) the other day. She gasped in horror when I wore very pale denim jeans with Uggs saying 'Mum they are summer jeans'. They looked nice IMO and nobody pointed and laughed when I went out.

I think it comes from going to an all girls school where the queen bee girls made all sorts of ridiculous rules about appearance to keep the 'lesser' girls in their place. A few years in the real world will sort her out.

plumstone · 06/10/2016 09:32

Years ago I heard this: White jeans in the summer, black in the winter, blue spring and summer - and worryingly for me adhered to it!! However this year the rebel has appeared and I have been all over black jeans in the summer - navy and black and will be rocking the white jean as and when I can - Louisa - loving the white and wine with ankle boots, Also like PP said check out Ines de la Fressange's book - it has been a revelation to my wardrobe!!!

Smrendell · 06/10/2016 09:34

Probably shouldn't admit but I wouldn't wear white jeans in the winter and most likely would judge someone for doing so. Confused Only because I feel so cold looking at them. I wouldn't say anything though, especially if I had form for getting upset when people made small comments about me like your SIL does if I remember the anklet thread correct.

burnishedsilver · 06/10/2016 09:58

I wouldn't wear white jeans in Winter either. I think they look Summery.

Doobigetta · 06/10/2016 10:07

It's not ok for an 18 year old to tell a grown-up her clothes are unacceptable, I know that.

Sofres · 06/10/2016 10:15

There are no rules on clothes, obviously you'd get a funny look from me if you have shorts on in the winter or a woolly jumper in the summer, but white jeans are fine.

Wear what makes me you happy.

Tell all those beautiful ladies their jeans aren't acceptable in the colder months.

Lucked · 06/10/2016 14:26

I like the white jeans winter look but it is only really doable if it is reactively dry as you will get dirty splash marks if you want walk around on a wet autumnal day in white. Therefore I have taken my white jeans to Paris in winter but don't wear them at home in Glasgow.

burnishedsilver · 06/10/2016 14:34

Even on those beautiful, well groomed, elegant women, I think the jeans look odd with winter clothes. While they are carrying off the look better than most, each outfit would, imo, look better if the jeans were blue, black or grey.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 06/10/2016 15:32

I wouldn't wear white jeans after summer either but I have no idea why? Maybe because I worry I'm going to get caught in a puddle and splash myself!

I've got some lovely white jeans I'm going to make a point of wearing them tomorrow I think.

AstrantiaMallow · 06/10/2016 15:34

I'd wear white jeans in any season but not any weather. Wet weather usually means mud or dirt marks as soon as you leave the house. So I usually don't wear my white jeans but the grey ones. Practical reason.

WarholsLittleQueen · 06/10/2016 15:37

I wear mine in the autumn / winter with tan Chelsea boots / tan converse and loose cosy grey jumper

Your SIL is chatting bob.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/10/2016 16:09

The thing about those links to Glamour, a lot of the slebs and models in the white jeans look like they live in places that are warm all year round

Cinnabunbun · 06/10/2016 16:16

I think they always look a bit TOWIE tbh but would say they could work in any kind of puddle free weather

Ilovewillow · 06/10/2016 16:22

I've seen them in Autumn/winter clothes catalogue so presumably not an issue at all! Sounds like a good outfit to me and she sounds very rude!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 06/10/2016 16:25

I agree about the puddles. I would probably end up with mud on them from picking up a child with muddy shoes.

Fine to wear to a pub though. I'm sure you looked great. It was a fairly rude comment or maybe just thoughtless.
